Intermittent loss of video (mimicking dirty heads symptoms)

As JSE suggested. Also dump any very old tapes. As you say some play perfectly, I suspect, from personal experience, that faulty ones are either very old, or if recorded on another machine, may be mismatched with your current player.

HOW DO I RECORD WITH A SONY SLV-N77 MANUAL DOES NOT HAVE ANY DIRECTIONS

Looks like a great brand with good features for the price.
  1. Connect Video & Audio Cables to a video signal source
  2. Connect Power Cable
  3. Turn on VCR.
  4. Insert a blank tape in the VCR.
  5. Note - A Broken Tab on the back of tape will prevent recording. This is called Write Protection.
  6. Cover the tab hole if you want to record over old video.
  7. Press RECORD on the VCR remote control.
  8. After a minute, press Stop, then PLAY to see recording.
  9. Cheers

I have a Sony SLV-EZ717

It sounds like the taped program was recorded on a different speed. The other VCR that you are playing the taped program may not have the speed needed to play it correctly.
Next time when you record a program try to make sure you use a speed that will be compatible on both VCRs.
For example a tape that last 120 minutes, using the different speeds will give the following recording times.
SP means "Standard Play" >>>> 2 hours
LP means " Long Play" >>>>> 4 hours
ELP means " Extra Long Play" 8 hours

Older VCRs have all the 3 speeds but newer ones only have SP and ELP.
Hope this helps.

Player wont turn off?

The most likely problem is that the mechanism is not reaching a stop position in order for the deck to be able to be turned off. This cane be due to loose belts or a harden grease in a cam operated mechanism. In any case it needs service- I used to work on VCR's all the time .

VHS tape is stuck in

This is often a frustrating problem but if you feel you can handle it go ahead with the following, otherwise get professional electronics help. If you have tried to eject the tape and tried other obvious ways to extract the tape and nothing has worked then you can remove the top cover and manually remove the tape. It is not that hard to do most of the time. First unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. You do not want to get a short or get shocked or zapped. Just unscrew the screws holding the cover in place and set the cover aside. Look at the tape to see where it is hung up. If you need to push the tape around so you get it off the posts or otherwise free up the tape, then gently do so until you free the tape from the tape transport. Sometimes this is all you need to do to extract the tape. You may be able to push out the tape from the VCR at this point. If you can get all the magnetic video tape back into the cassette but the tape simply will not come out then place the cover back onto the VCR, plug the VCR into the wall outlet, power on and try to eject the tape now. Sometimes this works. If all else fails, take the VCR into a electronics repair shop and have them remove the tape for you. They may tell you the VCR needs repairs also so this does not happen again.

WILL NOT TRACK. +/- BUTTONS ON FROM OF VCR ARE

I will assume you have tried to clean the video head, if you have not use a wet or dry cleaning tape "dry better choice" and see if that will work, the other option is use a brand new store bought blank tape T120 and set the vcr speed at sp and let it run all the way through. If all this fails it means either the video head is bad or you need alignment done inside the vcr.

Our Sony Video cassette recorder model SLV_N750

The problem is the idler assembly or the black square belt that drives it, this will cause the vcr to shutdown preventing tape transport. The vcr will need to be dismantled for repair, I recommend a tv technician to check your machine with an estimate.
