You have WRT54G router. This router has issues with the Firmware. Firmware is the software of the router. Your neighbor might not help you because of the Firmware of the router.
Try to upgrade the firmware of the router. Firmware is the software of the router.
Download the latest firmware of the router. Go to the manufacturer's web site and download the firmware of the router.
Open the set up page of the router and upgrade the firmware of the router. Once you upgrade the firmware of the router, reset the router.
On the router you will find a small reset button, hold it down for 30 seconds. release it. wait for 1 minute. Now unplug the power to the router and plug it back in.
Now you will need to reconfigure the router according to the Internet service provider.

Press and hold the recessed reset button on the back of the router for 10 seconds or so, then release it. When the router restarts it will be reset to factory defaults, and you can go into the setup screens and give it a new password. Default access information is:

address: //192.168.1.1
username: (leave blank)
password: admin

What happens when you try this? Error messages or other information would be helpful. I have one of these myself and the process works correctly, so I'd like to know what results you are getting.

Resetting password on a Linksys Router G

This is a simple operation if you know how to log on to your router
First step log on with a web browser 192.168.1.1 leave user id blank and type admin in password box
This will take you to opening page of router click on wireless and then security. This is the page where you set your password to make wifi secure!
Also you need to set password for Router open page above. Its better to remove default password and use your own password. click save at the bottom.

How do I go back and set up a security password so the neighbors can't use my wireless service? Router has been set up for years.

Go to your IP Adress (printed below your router, usually 192.168.0.1) enter the user credentials (commonly admin/password) and go to router security. If this is to complicated or you don't remember credentials, reset the router or tell the neighbors that you will sue them

Cant get WiFi conection keeps asking for password cannot remember it

Try resetting the router back to factory default, and set up again with a new password. What make and model of router are you using? Just ran into this issue with neighbors 2 new Kindles, which connect fine to my NetGear router, but will not connect to their Linksys WRT54GS router.

Trying to turn a Linksys WRT54GS into a hub

  1. If you want to set the router to work only as a switch with wireless access point, you may need to get into its setup page and adjust some settings.
  2. Using a computer that is wired directly to one of the router's Ethernet ports, launch IE and type 192.168.1.1. It is the default IP address of the router. Then it will open a window, asking for a username and password. By default, there is no username and the password is admin.
  3. Once you're in the router's User Interface, look for a sub tab called "Advanced Routing" under the main tab SETUP. Then set router mode to "Router" instead of Gateway. In some router's, the choice there is NAT enable or disable. If it is the one showing there instead of Router mode, then set NAT to disable. Click Save settings which is located at the bottom portion of the screen.
  4. Then click on "Basic Setup" and then disable DHCP server. Save the settings then.
  5. Then your modem now will be connected to one of the 4 Ethernet ports of the router.
Hope this helps!
