Inside Electric Furnace/Air Handler Not Working. Please help!

Hello,
A few weeks ago, during a cold snap, our heater stopped working. I tried the thermostat on A/C as well, and it was not working either. After some research and troubleshooting, I finally realized that the inside unit has it's own breaker in the attic - near the inside unit. I flipped the breaker on and off, and it started working again.
Since then, the inside unit has stopped working 3 or 4 times, and I have had to throw the breaker each time, thus making the unit work again. Today, it stopped working again, however when I throw the breaker today, nothing happens...
We have a American Standard split unit, Electric. Outside unit is American Standard Allegiance 14 (model# 2a7a4030b1000aa). Inside unit is American Standard Trane (model# TWE031E13FB1). Thermostat is a Ritetemp (model# 8050 0 84615 00020 4). There are a total of 4 breakers for the system: 2 at main breaker box - labeled 'Heat' and 'A/C'. 1 at the outside Unit, and 1 in the attic at the inside unit.
I am a true novice, so I am really not sure where else to look. Any thoughts or advice to troubleshoot the system? It's now cold again here, and my fiance and pets are shivering all night and day.. Please help!
Thanks, Michael

Okay, I opened up the breaker and tested the input side: tested on Vac 600 @ 245, and tested on Vac 200 @ 122. The output did not read anything on Vac 600, but it did read @ 122 on Vac 200. Does this mean that I have a problem with the breaker?

Inside the unit, there is a small fuse (looks like an auto fuse, and this is still intact). I have not gone any further yet.

Okay, all 4 terminals (input & output) showed 122. When I tested the other way - one-side showed 0, but the other-side shows voltage. So.. I have a bad breaker?

Problem solved! I went to Home Depot and purchased a replacement breaker. Installed it. And now we're up and running! I really really REALLY appreciate your help!!! Everyone will be warm and happy in no time. Thanks again!

Ok this can be simple or tricky is the breaker that trips the same size as the one in the breaker panel 2.look in the unit itsself see if there r breakers inside the unit there usually are and they might have tripped it might be as simple as flipping a breaker but the problem with the breaker tripping is what concerns me now it may just be undersized or getting weak and finally crapped out get ur meter and flip the breaker on and see if u r getting power to the unit if ur not u have gott a breaker that isnt letting power go thru now if u have power u might have a bad blower motor turn the unit on and calling for the fan on if the fan doesnt start try spinning the blower by hand now if it starts then u probably have a bad capacitor they r usually mounted on the side of the blower housing it is oval and its gonna be a 5mfd(microfarad) or 7.5mfd and that couldve been what was kicking the breaker now if the blower is stuck and it wont turn or its very hard to turn then make sure the blower wheel hasnt slipped on the shaft and is rubbing up against the housing if it is just loosen the set screw and set it back even and tighten it back up now if the wheel is free and its still hard to turn then u have a bad blower motor its not a big deal to change out and not real expensive if this dont help hit me back and well walk thru it hope this gets lil momma and the pets warm have a good day

ok now check ur breaker again go with ur black lead to a good ground and ur red lead on one of the terminals u should have 120 around about on both legs now test the output side u should have the sameif u dont u have a bad breaker now another way to find out is take ur red lead and put it on one input and take ur black lead and put it on the same side output u should read nothing do this on the other side the same way if u get voltage on either side that means ur breaker isnt letting power go thru and ull have to replace breaker now u have to do this with the breaker on so be careful

I have a Trane XV20i heat pump with two zones, TAM9 air handler & XL1050 thermostats. I need some programming advice.

Yes this is possible but is the real concern the noise or the money? If no electric heat during defrost obviously the house is not going to be heating therefore your heat pump will be working harder once heat resumes. Air handler does not need to be at 100%, that is factory recommendations.

Carrier electric furnace (air handler) stopped running

The 5 amp fuse may be bad, they go quite often, and they are exactly the same as the car ones. Check the fuse with a meter. If its OK turn the unit on and check for voltage going to the blower fan. You should get a reading between at least one pair of wires. The unit should have a schematic on it somewhere, check it to see which wire pairs are used for the variable speeds of the fan.

Carrier electric furnace/air handler stopped running

Check fuses first! If yours is the model with a fuse box you will see a flap that pulls down to reveal a block of fuses, the blade fuse you described is part of it too! Are all fuses ok?

I have a york furnace, pilot light is lit but i have not heat and no air is blowing..this happened last night also and this morning i accidently bumped into the furnace with my sons toy and it started...

Hello,
From what you are telling me here, you have a loose wire inside the furnace. You could try giving it a bump again and it may work. But prbably not for long...
You need to find the bad wire or have someone look at it that can tell where the bad connection is.

I have a Rheem Gas/Electric AC unit that provides both Air and Heat. Yesterday the heat stopped working... it blows out cold air. We've had some cold temperatures lately (low 20's) but this isn't unusual...

Heat pumps provide good heat until the tempurature drops below 35-40 degrees. After that there isn't much heat to extract from the outside air and then either the gas furnace kicks in or the electric heat strip does the job of heating the air. if you have heat strips, I would check your breakers in your panel and sometimes there are a couple of breakers right on the air handler or furnace. The ones that will be for your heat strip are 220v and will be twice as wide as your normal 110v breakers . Please don't trust a visual inspection as they can look like they are in the "on" position but are indeed tripped. Turn them all they way off and then back on. If the beakers check out you may have an open cicuit in the heat strips themselves and you will need to have a qualified HVAC tech look at your furnace to repair it.

If your furnace is a "duel fuel" and uses natural or LP gas for back up heat then your ten year old rheem probably needs a good maintenance by a qualified service tech. There is a flame sensor to clean, ignitor to check (replaces the old school pilots), burners to clean flue connections to check and much more. ALL manufacturers of any heating apliance recommend yearly maintenance. Most companies offer something for around 100 bucks. I hope this helps.

2 weeks ago one of my units stopped working properly. It got warm during the night even though I heard the unit running. I shut it off and called for repair service. They changed the thermostat and it...

sounds like the coils inside the air handler/furnace are freezing up. likely cause is the freon charge is incorrect (probably undercharged). it may have been correct when the tech did the work but some may have leaked out. it is slightly possible too that the system is overcharged. you should have the system pressure verified, and then have it checked for leaks.

Heat Pump Stops Working only in the Early Morning

When the unit does what you say does the fan motor outside stop also , if it does that means it is in defrost mode and should kick back over to normal after the system heats up the coil enough

Water dripping (almost running) out of the left corner of air handling unit. Help???

You're correct in checking the drain pipe, because it's become blocked. The only trouble is, you're trying to clear the wrong end. The condensate water is spilling out of the air handler because that's where the pipe has a clog. These pipes usually have un-glued joints next to the air handler, for times such as this. If you can't pull them apart, you may have to cut the pipes and reconnect tham with fittings from the hardware store. (which is a normal procedure.) I usually use a wet/dry shop vac when repairing this problem, sucking out the clog & the water, then blowing out the line to where it drains outside. I've also used the clothes hanger technique to drag crud out of the air handler fitting. Hope this is helpful. ;)
