What Motherboard are you using and what BIOS - I suppose it is an IDE drive (40Gb) On the older HDD you should check your jumper settings to identify the drive as a Primary or Secondary drive.Make sure the IDE cable is properly connected. This can be tricky sometimes as one of the pins could have bent. Make sure the drive actually spins when you power the computer on. Hold you hand lightly on the drive, and you should feel a slight vibration. If all of this is ok then -
when you boot up, go into the BIOS and see if the BIOS picks up the drive. If this is all ok, then your HDD maybe formatted with an incompatible file system and you would need to run a FIXDISK. Or the HDD is just shot. Try with another drive to verify.
Select the maxtor HDD as master by setting the Jumper to the extreme left of the hdd; i.e. next to the data cable. Remove all jumpers from the other HDD which you want to put as slave.
you need to detect your harddisk in bios setup. For that when you power up the computer press "del" key to enter in bios. Then check your harddisk is detected in bios. If not cxheck power cable and ide or sata cable connected to harddisk. Reconect both connection to harddisk then check.
So donot take any action to your Maxtor and Try to find a DR company and recovery the data.Maybe the firmware is having some problems.Usually the tools called HD Doctor from SalvationDATA can deal with the firmware problems.
