Using the USB cable I connected my HP Simplesave to my Fujitsu laptop and backed up selected files. I disconnected my Simplesave from the laptop and connected via the USB to my home desktop HP tower computer and saved selected files. I now wish to properly disconnect my Simplesave from the HP Desktop but the "safely remove hardware" function says "The device "Generic Volume" cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later." I have had this problem ejecting my USB Safesave mass storage device for about six (6) hours. How can I safely remove my HP Safesave from the desktop without damaging the mass storage device or the content saved on it?

Pc wont recognize my hp simplesave 2TB external hard drive

No PC stated
No OS stated. (operating system) nor if PC is internet connected.
no Simplesafe model stated, is it the 3.5" HDD? version
id yes it needs power pack to use it. HDD uses huge currents to start up. and spin.
USB ports?
if the drive fails on all PCs, the drive is bad. (or was erased by grimlin's in the night)
plug in the power pack 12vdc is correct.
do not mix it up with other packs or boom.
then listen to the hdd case with you ear, here it spin up?
if not the pack is dead, or the hdd is dead.

here is the power pack for it sold in stores
see that model number there you forgot, to mention, MD2....~~~~

12V Mains AC-DC Adapter for HP Simplesave 2TB MD2000HB External Hard Drive HS....

the drives can fail and be good.
for many reasons.
  1. bad usb port
  2. usb port driver missing.
  3. OS virus corruptiong
  4. drive fails to spin means no 12vdc power. (bad power pack)
  5. using a laptop and expecting the weak USB ports to start HDD motor, will never happen, on large 3.5" HDD. some cant even start a 2.5"

click start control panel administrive tools ,computer management ,device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or
if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again, sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems
click start control panel administrive tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now start or you might tick one box then return after its finished the first repair then return and tick the second box you should not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage this drive
click start click on my computer you should see your drive and you still need to format
right click then select format
another way is to control panel administrive tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select format
hope this helps

There are two possible causes for what you're describing. Either the disk drive inside the enclosure is dying/dead, or the circuitry inside the enclosure is having problems. The only way to know for sure would be to open the enclosure and remove the drive. With the drive removed, you can either connect the drive to a computer using a SATA cable directly or using a SATA to USB dock. Or you can try another hard drive with the enclosure to see if it has the same issue.

Want to use clone hard drive to run XP

Because the HP and Fujitsu have different devices, you cannot clone (or create an image of) the hard disk and expect it to work on the other laptop.
Your best bet would be to copy your data files onto a USB memory stick or an external USB hard drive and plug it into the HP. You can open the files on the USB memory Stick/hard drive to work on them or copy them to the HP's hard drive to work on them.
When your Fujitsu has been repaired you can copy the latest files from the USB memory stick/hard drive back onto your Fujitsu.
