no photos presented of screen messing up, (sadly)
compaq = old, too old, why mess with so old a box/?
the screen is bad, and $100 is 5 times what it is worth as a whole.
find a PC 10 years or newer so its VIABLE and supported
and do not buy XP or VISTA anything, both are DEAD now.
Black with lines. (LCD problems, ('damaged")
most times means bad screen.
does the external screen work, ? at the 15pin jack there, called VGA.?
using and external screen (plugged in)
when did this PC last run good. 5 years ago?
using an external screen, re-install the unstated OS.
it came with
WIN98 or XP (what it has now, click system in control panel and read what it is)
both those 2 are Dead OS/s now... dead and Virus magnets .
oddly HP has not deleted the over 10 year old support page
as most are..... that old. (you are very lucky, its like 1% chance this.)

does this COMpaq, have the hot key F11
that when pressed at power on , wakeup the system refresh?
Thanks for the response but there is absolutely no life in the PC. Plugging in the mains does not even bring any battery light or power light to life. Tried removing battery, holding power button for 60 secs etc. Nothing changed. Looking at other websites it seems to point to bios\motherboard problem, I'm hoping it's something simpler!
