When enabling wireless security the router and adapter must be both be configured and configured in a fashion that both support. If you need help provide confirmation of your wireless router's manufacturer and model and the same information for any wireless adapters or computers with built-in wireless adapters to be wirelessly connected.

This will allow us to determine the common security options for all wireless devices you have.

Sorry Tonyea -- because your response was posted as a solution I did not get notified you had responded. Next time login first and I believe you will be able to comment and the system will notify me you responded.

    I need some additional information.

What specifically does not working all of a sudden mean?

Periodic disconnects possibly for long periods of time around 10 minutes?

If so did you choose to hide your SSID (network name) and apply WEP / WPA security? If so there has been discussion of a problem where the combination noted above causes these connection issues. The recommended solution has been to unhide or show the SSID and keep the WEP / WPA security.

Second possibility -- the network signal fading out causing interruptions with your service. Possibility there are numerous wireless devices in the world now. If you have a wireless phone try to keep the base station and the wireless router separated. If you have neighbors with routers (you can see more than one router when attepmting to connect); you may want to change your router configuration to use channel 1 or 11 for the radio instead of the often defaulted channel 6. If the one you choose does not work better try the other.

Third possibility -- you need to explain the symptom a little better so I can assist with diagnosis and solution.

Other items to consider -- the connection may have been lost and needs to be manually re-established. The connections may have come loose. If you did not change your SSID (wireless network name) in the router you may be having conflicts with another identically named router.

I have Windows 8 and have not been able to connect to the internet.

There are several possible reasons to have a connection fail. You could have a driver issue, the network adapter may have failed, the passkey/SSID aren't correct (for wireless connections) or the router/WAN network is down. (The WAN being disconnected happens with my systems at regular intervals.) If the router/access point has been secured to limit the number of devices on the network or only allow certain MAC addresses, use a different device to log in to that router and increase the number of allowed devices. (This will depend on the make/model of your router. It's probably under the Advanced settings.)

What type of hardware are you using (laptop/desktop/tablet)? What make and model is it? If you have both wired and wireless network adapters, try making a new network with the other adapter. Also try to create a new network connection for the current adapter.

You can check for driver issues from the desktop clicking the Windows key + X (on systems with keyboards) and choosing the Control Panel. Then under System and Security (or Hardware and Sound) choose the Device Manager. Scroll down to the Network Adapters and expand that section by clicking on the plus sign. If there is a triangle with an exclamation point or a red x, then you have a driver issue. Use another machine to download the drivers and place them on a USB drive or other external media. Install the drivers. (If you can use a different network adapter, then just download and install the drivers.) Try the network trouble-shooter to identify a problem.

If updating the drivers doesn't work, check if other devices do connect to your network. If another device works, try a USB network adapter (or for a desktop, a PCI/PCI-e network card). You may need to disable the on-board network adapter in the BIOS. (This is hardware dependent again.) If other devices can't access the network, try directly connecting a wired network to your DSL, FIOS, or cable modem. If the direct connection doesn't work, then contact your provider. If the direct connection works, try a new router/access point.

I hope this helps.

Cindy Wells
(note: on an older XP laptop with only USB 1.0 ports, I recommend replacing the device, instead of a USB network adapter. The USB port speed will make the network connection excessively slow.)

I installed my enGenis eub9707 mini wreless n usb adaper, and I have local connectivity but not internet. Not sure what to do. Help!

Your problem it seems to be a router problem. If on router side, you have enabled the access protection based on devices MAC addresses, then you must add the new adapter's MAC address into the router's MAC list with allowed devices that are able to reach the internet. For this, you must enter into your router admin settings via http and go to the security section and update the MAC list with allowed devices by adding your new adapter's MAC address. On my router, if I must permit to a new device to go to internet, I have two sections to update: "Wireless->MAC Filtering->Update allowed devices" and the second one is: " Security->MAC Filtering->Update allowed devices "
Good luck!

How do I connect my HP 8250 Wirelessly? I have a router and a Linksys wireless-B adapter.

Make sure your router is set to accept Wireless-B connections...most aren't. Log into your router and setup wireless, using an SSID and security. Then connect with your laptop and you're good to go.

I have an old laptop and this wireless g card do I need a router or can this work at any hotspot

If you are going to connect to someone elses WiFi service which is also known as a Hotspot you are good to go.

Once your adapter "sees" the network the only thing you need to do is connect. Some Hotspots will have open access and some will have secure access where you will have to enter an access code to connect.

If this helps please vote for my solution.

Excellent Wireless Network Connection, cannot access internet

The unsecure public network nay be using mac address filtering. In this case, the network will show as being unsecured, and will even allow you to connect in some cases, but then will not allow you to surf once connected.

ok....
it seems that you are tring to connect to someone elses secured network which means you will not be able to connect to this wireless network as it has security enabled in it and the passphrase is know to the person who has setup this network....what i can suggest is that you can try connecting to unsecured networks if it is available...if there is no networks unsecured networks available then you will not be able to connect to the internet wirelessly..

Hi, have just purchased toshiba satellite pro L300 PSLB1A which has a realtek RTL8187B wireless 802.11b/g 54Mbps usb 2.0 network adapter.(internal) and it refuses to connect to my new Linksys wireless...

If you have more than one computer on your network, try disabling the firewalls on all computers and trying again. If this works, then you need to adjust your firewall settings to allow your network to function properly. If this does not work, you may have to log into your linksys router and check the wireless settings.

Let me know what happens.

Username & password

Changing the router password from admin to any password I think that you would be possible. Other brands of router has that option. And the router password won't affect the password for the wireless connection, they are different from each other. Wireless mac Filter is another way of securing your wireless network. Its done by listing the MAC Addrses (media Access control) or the physical address of your wireless adapter on your computer/s to either allow them to connect to the network or not to connect to the network. but I recommend to just use WPA security. It's secured and its much easier to add another wireless device to your network, because you just need to put the password and no need to get the MAC address and manually encode in on your router setup page. Its also possible to change the SSID or the name of your network.

I will get back to you with the steps on how to change the ssid adn change the router password. Okay?
