There's some program or driver that is loading up when windows starts "normally" that's no when it starts in safe mode. Have you recently installed any new hardware? Webcam? Printer? Harddrive? if you have, go to device manager while in safe mode and remove the driver. If you installed a new program that runs automatically during start up, then use MSCONFIG to change it from starting. Again, do this from safe mode. Go to start > run >TYPE: msconfig and then ok, and then the tab should be called "startup". one of these two things are most likely the problem because like you said it boots in safe mode no problem, Safe mode had the computer boot with only the bare minimum drivers/software needed for start up. If neither of these two things work, then, (again, in safe mode) right click your hard drive from My computer > properties >Tools > Check now (under error checking)

Hope this helps you solve it

It's stuck on the blue screen. This happened after starting a restore point and I dropped the battery out before it was finished.

It could also be a very bad virus. If it was a driver then you most likely get a blue screen- but not always. I suggest you download spyhunter and run a scan with that in Safe mode(with networking) per Ausified instructions and see what comes up- if theres a virus hindering your start up spyhunter will catch it.

What can i do to fix my dell inspiron one desktop from freezing at windows starting screen

press f8 vigorously as the computer begins to boot. this should take you to the windows start options screen, which includes diagnostic tools such as windows repair/restore and safe mode.

Windows repair (repair your computer) has a start up repair function which you can attempt, and if that does not work, there is a windows restore (from previous back up/restore point) in the repair utility as well.

If neither of those features work, choose "run in safe mode(/with networking)" at the f8 windows start options screen instead of "repair my computer". it may be usable in safe mode, and safe mode may reveal more clues about an actual hardware malfunction.

long story short, f8 before windows begins to cycle up.

Main screen with icon comes on then icons go out and a white screen w/currsor and freezes

You should start up your computer from WinPE, a CD residen simplified Windows operating system. It might help you to make some diagnostics. Get it from
http://www.uploadable.ch/file/mKD6atNTMRGF
It's only 121 Mb; burn ISO to CD and boot it . Probably you should change startup sequence on BIOS to boot from CD-ROM

Dell latitude D830 will boot up to windows XP screen and then will freeze. reboot and comes up with gray screen. F2 during booting does nothing. What could it be?

Turn on the Laptop and as soon as you see the Dell screen click F8. Then click on Safe Mode Networking. Once you log into your account you will then go Superantispayware.com and download the portable version. Then run a complete scan. Then remove any viruses it picks up

My dell inspiron freezes on the welcome page

While there are a number of possible solutions which may or may not work depending on several factors, the easiest to try is to boot to safe mode and run a system restore.

To boot to safe mode:
When you start the system, as soon as the blue dell logo goes away, tap the f8 button. This should get you to a menu from which you can choose "safe mode". It will show a bunch of writing on the screen and should eventually bring you to the login page, login as administrator.

Run system restore:
This varies depending on which version of windows you are running. In XP it is start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system restore.

Other things you can try:
Login as a different user.
Use start>run>msconfig from safe mode to disable startup items which may be causing the problem.
Consider removing recently installed software which may have caused the problem.
Scan for viruses, malware, spyware, ect.
Run diagnostics on the system by pressing f12 on the dell logo and chosing diagnostics.
The worst case scenario to fix a problem like this is reinstalling windows.

Have you tried booting from the original system CD? Another option would be to download and burn an ISO image of Linux Ubuntu Workstation 9.10 Live CD. Try to Boot from this CD. If it boots successfully, it should give you the ability to access your hard drive to retrieve your data. It might also indicate if your system is having a hardware issue. We have installed and run Ubuntu Linux and plenty of these machines with good success... great way to troubleshoot hardware functionality and allow access to data without loosing it.

Keeps logging off

If you cannot log into windows in either the normal or safe mode, your repair options are limited.
You can try the following:
  1. Run diagnostics on the hard drive, see if it fails, if the drive fails diags, replace it.
  2. If the drive passes diags, then try booting to recovery console (Boot to XP CD, R at first prompt. Try running the chkdsk /r command.
  3. If no change, try a repair reinstall of windows.

Try booting to Safe Mode and see if the problem still exists. Press F8 when you're on the Dell Screen and choose Safe Mode. If the problem does not happen in Safe Mode, then do this:

1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type msconfig
4. Choose Diagnostic Startup
5. Restart to Normal Mode.
