Typically, all gas operated appliances will get a "gas smell" from time to time. What you're really smelling is the odorant (rotten egg smell) that is added into both propane and natural gas, as these gases have no smell by themselves.

The smell will vary from normal to very strong as the "receipe" for how much ordorant is added into either your propane tanks or the gas supplied to your home. Typically, when tanks start getting low, the smell is more concentrated, while with piped natural gas, the smell can be very strong at different times, based on how and when the gas company adds odorant into the main supply lines.

Usually when a gas appliance is first turned on, the smell can be rather strong, until the gas ignites. So long as your oven is lighting properly, there is nothing to worry about.

However, if you're hearing a rather loud "whoosh" sound as the oven lights, it could be that your ignitor is getting weak and might need to be replaced. If you've got a weak ignitor, it could be allowing a little bit too much gas to build up in the oven compartment before it lights, hence the reason you're smelling the gas.

You can check for a weak ignitor by simply watching the oven when you start it, if the gas lights quickly, once the ignitor is glowing brightly and you've heard the "click" of the gas valve opening (in the oven), then everything is fine.

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

Maytag gas oven takes a long time heat and smells of gas.

Important---if you smell gas--I'd be very very careful---could be your control valve or lines to it are malfunctioning or leaking. You might have to call in an expert repair person. How old is the oven? Some preliminary checks you might make are: Do you have a pilot lite or preheaters on the unit? If a pilot lite, make sure it is lit. An unlit pilot lite could sometimes give the smell of gas if malfunctioning. If so, there is is a procedure for lighting the pilot lite--check your user or installation manual. If you have pre-heaters make sure they are lighting up. Normally you have one for the top broiler burner, and one for the bottom oven burner. Check your preheater(s) by selecting either broiler or oven and visually checking to see if they are warming up. After 15 seconds or so, they should be turning bright red. You will see some light coming from them. Check one pre-burner at a time. If they do not come on quickly, shut off the associated valve. Again, be very, very careful with any buildup of gas. It could cause an explosion. At the least it could make you sick.

Frigidaire gas oven, 5 years old, oven pre-heat light comes on and stays on, oven gets warm but not up to temp (it was like this for about an hour), also smell gas when oven door is opened. Burners work...

I don't have a solution, but I was wondering if it constantly beeps until you press the start button? I am having the same problem with my oven preheating. Until we can figure out how to stop this we unplug it and shut the gas off when not in use.

Gas stove When I turn on the oven, I smell gas,

This is more than likely the igniter to be sure you will need to do an amp draw on the igniter. To do this watch the video on troubleshooting a gas oven at www.appliancehelponline.com/servicemanual.html

Smelling Gas and Soot in Oven

well its pretty normal u will smell gas when its preheating but if u think its not then u can pull the oven out and check the gas line connection is tight if it is then u can also get a spray bottle of soapy water and spray the whole line and if u see alot of bubbles then there is ur leak and for the soot problem u can use the clean cycle which all it does is reach a very high temp and pretty much burns everything like crumbs to a crisp and all u have to do is basically wipe it out with a damp cloth and maybe a mild soap and sponge good luck

Burner flame shuts off during use and then you smell gas

all ovens, when they reach temperature they go off and on to kip the temperature, but if you smell gas the oven ignitor needs replacing, the ignitor gets red hot to ignite the burner ,but when ignitor does not get hot enough, it will have a delayed, that's the reason you smell gas.

GE oven

Yup...I believe this may have been an issue with some GE models. I seem to remember a problem where some models had problems staying lit after preheating. The fix was replacing the oven thermostat. Now...the normal cycle for an oven lighting is just what you described. The glow igniter will glow first, followed by the gas valve opening, followed by ignition. Once the oven reaches optimum temperature it is normal for the gas to shut off and come back on to maintain oven temperature. However, if this is going on in a frequent fashion with the oven never getting warm, your guess is probably a correct one. Good luck to you.

Self clean burnout

1758, have the technician start with the terminal block. This is where the power is hooked to the range. Check for loose connections, cracks, burnt wires. Are you sure the board and relays are burnt out? Have him check the thermal disk that sits on top of the oven cavity. If this is open, no heat. In the past I had to move or elevate these TCO's away from the vent. I would use two small nuts to elevate it from the oven body to prevent it opening during cleaning. These are just a couple of things to check. Catriver...post back.
