I just purchased an Acer X1160 Projector and obviously am not savvy enough to understand what to do to make it work. When connected to my HP Laptop I get the image of my screen saver, but cannot get anything else to the projector screen. What to do ?

Your computer is probably using the projector as a second screen instead of displaying a copy of the laptop screen.
The quickest way to confirm is to try moving your cursor (mouse) off the right-hand side of the screen. Does it then show up on the projector? If so, then you can grab and move windows back and forth between the two screens.

If that solves it for you, please be sure to click the thumbs-up.
If not, add a comment and I'll try to explain

could you explain for me please, mines doing the same

Sure, on your laptop screen, you have windows (like the browser that's showing FixYa right now) A Projector can either work as a mirror of the laptop screen, or as an extension of the screen. Imagine the projector screen taped to the side of the laptop display. If you move the mouse, or move a window "off the side" of the laptop screen, you should see it appear on the projector screen.

Can't run a DVD from my Apple Mac through my Acer Projector -

Depending on which Mac you have, you need an adapter. The latest Macbooks use a Mini DVI to video converter - you can get one from the Apple Store.
