I was mowing my backyard this afternoon, and all of a sudden there was a grinding noise as I was moving. The yard is more or less flat, and I know I didn't hit anything (sticks, etc). Obviously I stopped, disengaged the blades, and shut down the mower. As I shut it off, I lifted the hood and listened. The engine seemed to be running okay, but there was a little bit of white (I think) smoke coming off of it. It smelled hot. I let it sit for a couple of minutes and checked the oil. It was right in the middle of the good zone. I restarted it (started fine) engine seemed to be running fine, but sounded just a little off. I put into drive, and with throttle low, moved forward. It sounded like a car that was dragging a muffler, and had a lot more vibration than I think is healthy. As I took it back to the shed, I played with speed and throttle a bit. the faster the speed, the worse the grinding/dragging noise. It seemed to be coming from directly below me. the throttle speed didn't seem to effect anything, as long as my ground speed stayed steady. Also the faster I went, the worse the vibration. obviously I generally went slow as to try to minimize any damage, but thought it was worth it to try to get some more info while it had to move it anyway....
This could well be the diff trans assembly.
If the machine is relatively old, then it's probably due.
I'm afraid you're going to have to get on your hands and knees, in order to inspect the under side. Where the source of the noise is coming from.
Check for unusual wear, loose or missing fixings and oil stain's.
In general, anything that looks out of place.
The oil btw, should be changed regularly, as there is no filter that helps the 'lasting' life of the it.
Also, some of these could be signs of a fault of the engine, which could be quite serious.
But I think it's more likely, some loose or missing bolts. Check that everything that shouldn't move (Like the transmission), doesn't.
And while you're there, inspect the belts.

If this mower has a manual lever that has to be pushed up in order to engage the blades then check the tension pulley that connects to the lever cable on the top of the deck,it probably need to be lubricated or cleaned in order to move freely back to the normal position.
