The Brother HL-2140 does not include duplex printing. The only option for double sided printing with this model is to print odd numbered pages, then manually replace the paper into the tray and print the even numbered pages in a second set.
It is possible that the drum needs replacing.
Print a lifetime status page, and see if it says "drum 0%". If so, replace the drum and RESET the counters by using the reset button combination.
It is most likely that your Laser Unit is failing. It could also be dirt on the electrodes of the drum unit and machine body or the ground terminal on the paper tray is bent. It is best that you visit you local Brother Authorized Service Center for additional help.
