My Bernette did exactly the same thing as you describe and when I took it to the mechanic there was a gear right inside that had split on the main drive path. It was a nylon gear and it had cracked right through the middle - my machine was about 12 years old at the time.
After one store advised I junk the machine, I then priced the part from Bernina head office, spoke to another mechanic and he was able to send my machine to another mechanic he knew who could pull the thing apart quicker because he'd done the repair before. I was warned it would cost $270-350 but I love the machine so said go ahead.
I'd suggest you take your husky to a local husky dealer for a quote on this, it does sound similar.
