These engine adjustments vary by year, but the later models had their idle RPM adjusted with the boat in the water to account for exhaust back-pressure. Actual idle speed is set by adjusting the Idle Timing while the unit is in gear in the water. Check the service manual for actual timing specifications, the owner's manual won't have this information.

SOURCE: 9.8 hp mercury outboard shutting off in low idle speed.

My problem ended up being the spring on the reed valve being weak. But at the same time and while I had already had my carb broke down I took a can of carb cleaner to it and cleaned it. In order to replace the spring on reed valve you will have to buy a new one, but don't worry I only payed about $6.00 for mine. You may also look into replacing your primer bulb if you haven't already because may allowing air to build up in your gas line while you are basically idiling.Once you get the carb straightened out you may have to reajust it again. If I might be able to help you again you may contact me at [email protected].

SOURCE: Missing operators manual for Evinrude 2 hp outboard motor

Your best bet is ebay for a replacement user manual. Take a look around, you will come across one... For the meantime, gas oil ratio should be 50 parts gas to 1 part oil, i.e. 50:1. General care: Dont go full throttle for any length of time. Cruise of 3/4 throttle... Always flush engine after use in saltwater, including washing down exterior. Keep spark plugs in good order and check prop for fishing line wrapped around in near the prop hub. Otherwise, get a yearly service and have them check the water pump and replace as needed, get it tuned etc and gearbox oil changed.

SOURCE: outboard motor won't run under load

I have 1969 5hp Johnson. Starts and runs good, but will only push a 14ft row boat slow at low to medium rpm. When at higher rpm the the motor just revs up and the boat slows down to almost nothing just like it has seaweed around prop.Any help would be great.

SOURCE: 30 hp evinrude outboard, running full throttle, then surges as if running out of gas. Will conk out if not taken back to idle. Whats causing this?

Sounds like air is getting into the fuel line. If you have a squeeze bulb primer check to make sure that it stays firm after you run it a bit. I had an air leak on a clamp attaching the primer bulb to the fuel line and the same thing happened to me. When the engine starts to cut out squeeze the primer bulb and see if it starts running better, if it does then you probably do have an air leak in the line and it is losing it's prime. Hope this helps!

Testimonial: "That was the problem! Inspected the fuel line from the tank to the motor, up to the fuel pump and found the problem. I just recently rebuilt the fuel pump. What I had done was use "zip ties" on the fuel line in to the connector with screen that attaches to the fuel pump; then a zip tie on the fuel line out from the fuel line. When put together, the locking heads of the zip ties was pushing against the fuel pump line attachment not allowing it to seal, and sucking in air. I adjusted the zip tie heads, screwed the fuel in line back on, and now it runs like a champ!!! Thank You!"

How do you set the idle on an evinrude motor

The motor end of the control cable has an adjustment on it where it is clamped down to the cowl. Loosen the clamp nut and screw the cable end in or out to get your desired idle speed.

1964 5 1/2 hp evinrude kills at high speed

You should have a High Speed carb adjust and a Low Speed carb adjust. If it's running fine while idling, adjust the high speed setting. If you have two nobs, its the lower one. May be set wrong. If you don't have two nobs, remove the carburator and check the jets to make sure they are completely clean or better yet, order yourself a carb rebuild kit to take care of all of this. I just rebuilt my 1971 evinrude 4hp and the carb kit made the world of difference.

Have 90 hp evinrude 1982 What rpms should it be running on idle?

You can get rpm data by searching your browser using "90hp Evinrude Specs" or "1982 90hp Evinrude idle specs". Changing the jets usually costs you performance on one end or the other. If you have needle rods, a narrower one will have the same effect as a bigger opening in a jet. But you have rpm limits that you should not exceed. Changing the prop can give you more power over the sacrifice of top end speed.
