Not sure what you mean by "vertical" bobbin. Everything I've found indicates it is a top loading bobbin that sets horizontally in the machine.

Hi . try adjusting the tension screw on the bobbin case on the thread tension leaf . tighten it slightly just enough that the thread needs needs a little bit of nudging to come out . do the same for the thread coming through the needle . this should help .

Are you sure the bobbin thread is in the case correct. it also as tension support.Or is the bobbin thread right . When you make your bobbins that also should have tension.

Pull the slide plate open and watch the hook (the rotating part under the bobbin case). It should move around with no hitch.

If it does not turn, it has a broken gear. The model 457 has a vertical shaft gear that breaks and it's easy to replace.

Check the position of the bottom piece that holds the bobbin carrier to the left so it rides smoothly on the rotating hook that carries the upper thread around the bobbin. I found my wife"s machine loose so the bobbin carrier was out of position and not riding on the ledge of the rotating part. loosen two screws and push it to the left and tighten.
If upper thread bunches below the material it needs more tension so it pulls back up through the material.
