I'm trying to use this 'Photosmart' printer as a network printer at home, via a TP-Link router WR340GD. The dongle-type print server seems incompatible with this printer, as the network cannot 'find' it in the vicinity and configure it, though it can when a similar C4580 printer is plugged in (and the C4680 works perfectly in the old set-up). I thought the server could only see the UBS connecting socket on the printer, but clearly it looks inside! So is their any hardware switch in this printer, or software trick in Windows 7, that could be used to solve the problem? Thanks, Tim (Sao Paulo).

it is possiable that a firewall is in the way, but more likely is that you are on a different logical network or subnet.
the HP software relies upon doing a broadcast to find HP printers, broadcast traffice is not normally permitted between subnets, this is why the HP software does not find your printer.
basically you need to creat a new port on the computer in question and then associate a printer to that port.
do so by doing the following on XP pro.
get to the printers folder then click from the menu "File"
click "server properties"
click add port and then double click on the (Standard TCP/IP Port) a new wizard opens click next
in the top box enter the ip address of your printer. and click next. leave the device type as "Standard and as generic network card) click next then finish. then close.
now you have to link your printer to your new port.
install a new printer
making sure that you select local printer... but removing the tick "Automatically detect......" then click next and select LPT port 1.
click next choose HP on the left colum and HP lasterJet III from the right colum. click next give the printer a name of your choosing. and if nesseary choose if you want it to be a default printer or not.
click next and leave do not share selected.
click next
on the "do you want to print a test page " select "No"
then finish.
once done
right click you new printer select properties
then select the "Ports" tab
scroll down the list until you see new Standard TCP/IP port listed, select your port. then click apply
lastly click the advanced tab
using the driver part of this screen you are able to select the correct driver from the dropdown list if it is not avaliable click the new driver button and follow the prompts.
click OK when done.
hope this helps.

I had the same problem. After many hours of trial and error, I got two XP laptops and a Vista desktops configured. Be sure to use the latest firmware from Dlink. Disable all s/w firewalls. In my case Norton Firewall from Yahoo was a problem. The Vista PC was configured to print within 30 mins and the XPs took a while. I couldn't get the print server to appear in the My Network Places A couple of the guys who left comments on the product at Newegg actually have a good solution. The solution involves setting the printers up as local printers with standard TCP/IP ports that point to the IP address or the URL ("dlink-"6_last_digits_of_MAC_ID) and USB port number 9100-9103. You can google how to set up local printers w/ TCP/IP connections with USB ports on the internet. Note the Scanner will not be recognized but at least you can print on MF4150.

Hi, to make sure your printer is online. Please do these steps:
? On your windows 7 computer, please go to control panel and click printers and faxes.
? From printers and faxes, you can see your printer icon, right click the printer icon and select online.
? Try to print and that should be working.

Hello.
The print server is not the issue. You need to find printer driver(s) that are compatible with your computer's Windows 7 64 bit operating system.
For each printer, go to the manufacturer's website (HP, Epson, Lexmark, etc.). Look for your specific printer model and the drivers for that model. Look for the Windows 7, 64 bit driver.
If you have found the printer and drivers and Windows 7, 64 bit is not indicated, that printer is not supported on your computer, whether through the print server or directly connected.
Hope this helps.

Hi there,
Have you tried turning off firewall programs or resident anti virus like windows firewall, windows defender, AVG, norton, mcafee etc?
PLease try turning them off especially the firewall and check if they will print.
Hope this helps!
