I have an Acer 5620Z which I connected to a separate monitor yesterday. Now when I boot up the laptop the screen shows the Acer logo, then the Windows XP loading screen but then goes completely blank. I have tried booting in safe mode but it hangs on one of the drivers and then just stops. How do I get my display back please?
Thanks, should have said, have already tried this but the F5 button isn't working. Am trying to find a way to restore the monitor settings which is proving impossible at the moment as I have no display :(Thanks, should have said, have already tried this but the F5 button isn't working. There should be a display toggle key on your keyboard. This will toggle the display from the external display to the laptop lcd. Try pressing the Fn + F5 key to toggle the display.

There are more than one possibility for this scenario (settings, cable, lamp):
•The display is not set as the primary or active display (such as is the case when set to view in projector-only display mode). Many laptops have either a Function key (such as F4) or a hotkey expressly set aside for presentations (usually at the top right with two other hotkeys). Newer operating Windows systems allow for changing the display mode through holding a Windows key down while pressing the [P] key.
•The monitor data cable is damaged. Sometimes, this can be tested by changing the vertical angle of the display to see if the display shows. (In this case, replace the display data cable.)
•The lamp inside/behind/above/below the display could be going out. (In this case, replace the display lamp.)
The easiest way to test & to give a temporary workaround would be to hook an external monitor to the laptop & to turn on both devices to ascertain if the video output shows on it.
If all else fails, then take it to a technician because the system board could be bad.
Reboot. When the computer first starts, there is text that shows some information and the Bios Version. This is the boot screen.
Do you see the boot screen?
If yes, then your video/screen is good, and it is the windows driver.
If no, then it is your screen, or the cable going to the screen, or the motherboard.
If no, then connect a external monitor and press FN (function) key and the F7 (or another F key with a picture of the tv monitor) this toggles between your laptop screen and the external screen. (it may not be necessary, but with some it is)
If the external monitor works but not your laptop monitor then it IS your laptop monitor.
Now test if it is the backlight or the video. Does the laptop screen light up but no text? Then this is the Cable to the screen or the screen itself. Breaks at the hinge often.
or Do you see text faintly, but the screen doesn't light up? That is the inverter board (most likely) and you need to replace that.
Possibly the monitor is defective - usually most laptops have a blue plug at the back for an external monitor, if plugging in a normal monitor brings up a screen, then likely the laptop monitor is defective. If you get a splash screen and bios info on trying to start it,it indicates your windows is defective or has lost it's start-up files - a windows reinstall will fix that.
Hello Karthik, This must surely be a problem with your monitor, because you say that you see the white screen while boot up. If this is a graphic driver issue, you may have the problem after booting up in windows. Since its been only a month old laptop, the product must be in warranty for sure. Take away any CDs in the drive, any USB drives and see if this white screen appears. Let us know.
first try booting the laptop and pressing the Fn key with the numerical ( numbered key ) that has a picture of 2 screens on it. This is for booting to an external monitor. you could also try adding an external ( pc monitor ) this will eliminate any motherboard Faults.
Secondly, the graphics chip driver may be corrupt or not installed correctly. if you have a restore cd, you could try booting the laptop, with the cd in the drive.
you can then try, to see if the settings in the bios are all correct, by booting/starting the laptop and pressing esc or F2 or delete immediately as the laptop starts. ** Be-Careful** what you adjust.
My suggestion is to look for. ** default settings tab** or load setup defaults.
these are the obvious things to try, before assuming that you have a faulty graphics chip or motherboard fault.
Check the swapping monitor function screen FN + F4 on Compaq. It allows to change from internal to external or Both monitors.OR Start in Safe mode with VGA basic settings and configure your Display settings.
Have you tried to disconnect the external monitor and just booting to the laptop? If this works, then use the "e" key next to the power button to add the second monitor.
Thanks, should have said, have already tried this but the F5 button isn't working. Am trying to find a way to restore the monitor settings which is proving impossible at the moment as I have no display :(
