My fridge freezes the food in the fridge .

The freezer will freeze up on the coils in the freezer side and stop the air flow from coming up to the fan to blow into the other side. I have to melt the ice from the coils then it will work again. what is the problem with the coils freezing up. Does the freezer have a cycle it goes into to thaw this ice from the coils and is not doing it.

I have a Kenmore model 363.59577994 side by side ref/freezer. The coils on the freezer side keepin icing up so nothing cools properly. I have had this issue before many years ago and had to replace the defrost timer on that unit but it was a much, much older unit. I pulled out the heater assemply and the thermostat since the hearer unit was all black and there was black powder like something had burnt underneath of it. When I looked at the heater, one end slid out so the coil inside is broken.

I am ordering a replacement unit now, but my question is should I replace the defrost timer just in case it is bad also? it isn't very expensive and I may as well do it since I'll have everything pulled apart. The problem is I saw what the unit looks like on the wensite to order it, but where is it located on the ref/freezer? I cannot find anything that resembles the picture?

Turn off
take all food out.
open door of freezer.
let all ice melt away.
remove cover over evaporator coil.
turn on.
should hear fan running.
if it doesn't, hot wire it with 110 v.
if fan no works with hotwire, replace fan.
if fan works with hot wire, find evaporator thermostat about 1 inch big
clipped on coil of evaporator.  short out ( put wire connecting its two wires ) .
if fan runs now, replace evaporator thermostat about $ 15

Check the back wall of the freezer for ice buildup.
If yes, a defrost parts problem.
Check the freezer fan. Is it running?
If no, replace the freezer fan.
Check the condenser fan at the compressor. Is it running?
If no, is compressor hot?

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
  • if you already checked this and think it is a different problem then let me know, i will help you figure it out.

GE GSH25JSTA SS side by side fridge not cooling/freezing

In most cases it is the Defrost timer circuit. One of three things the Defrost time (most likely) it allows the cooling for a 6 to 10 hour period and the defrosting for 10 to 30 minutes to remove ice buildup, ICE BUILDUP is the main problem as it restrict air flow, the cooling air circulation through the system. You see cool air only comes in the freezer side and passes through vents (pass ways) to the refrigerator side. Ice buildup in the freezer side inhibits cooling air to the refrigerator side. You think the freezer is working, but it is only cooler because there is ice in there that you can't see. The Terminator (a LIMIT switch) opens the defrost circuit if the defrost heater gets too hot (second likely) the next is the Heater which heats for those 10 to 30 minutes to melt the ice buildup (least likely) no matter the Unit you have they all have this circuit... Hope this helps, I'm Tango
