Which version of Ubuntu are you trying to install this on??
The minimum requirement is that you have at least kernel
version 2.6.27.5-117 or later installed. This works with Ubuntu 11.04
It will not work with any kernel versions previous to this. If you are having trouble installing it, you might have to upgrade your Ubuntu and kernel version for this to work.
It might be true, since the sound card was made for the Win9k kernel. It differs from NT Kernel in the core. The 9k kernel's core is MS-DOS and the NT Kernel has it's very own core. Usually 95/98/ME software does work in XP and if it doesn't, can be updated to a newer version. But hardware is a different thing. You should first check if there's an updated version of your driver for Windows XP, but I prefer to a hardware problem, since two of the speakers work and the others don't. I recommend buying a new sound card if there isn't an updated version of your driver.
Get the new installer from free AVG websit - http://free.grisoft.com The new installer version 7.5.441 fixes the kernel initialization issue and other bugs. If you still have v7.5.432, you'll be offered a big update that fixes the kernel issue.

As per that website, the drivers are now included in the Kernel since 2.6.18. If you're manually compiling your kernel, you can find the module in the menuconfig of the linux kernel source (ie in the `make menuconfig` menu) in:
Device Drives -> Network device Support -> Wireless LAN (non-hamradio) -> Wireless Lan Drivers -> USB ZD1201 based Wireless device support
