My Internet Explorer 8 (and running XP Pro) will not open web pages on Search or links. IE will open web pages I click on the address bar on top. For some reason, PC is running in 'compatibility mode/view', but I did not select this. When I researched how to fix this whole problem, the 'help' articles were not useful. I re-booted but nothing changed. How do I fix this? I am a novice, so go easy on the high-tech answers. Thanks.

SOURCE: compaq pc, dual boot xp home/hp/pro

2 things. First, when you say xp/pro wiped out your modem do you mean your ethernet or internal modem? Assuming it's a cable/dsl modem, I'd reboot the modem. Then while booting into xp/home, I'd copy the driver .inf file for your ethernet and paste it to a "public" folder (non system folder, desktop or another HD will work). Then re-boot into xp/pro and do a hardware scan and install the ethernet using the driver that you copied. This should get you on the internet using xp/pro. If you're getting the same cable unplugged error after all of this, you may just have a bad ethernet cable or connection. Good Luck Patty!

Hi- I can get onto the internet but now strangely I cannot get onto the Shutterfly website. I have IE 8 and Firefox 4. please help!.net

Try clearing your browser cache and cookies. Sometimes, temporary files in the cache will interfere with web browsing.

In IE 8:
  1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button 4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33.jpg. In the search box, type Internet Explorer, and then, in the list of results, click Internet Explorer.

  2. Click the Safety button, and then click Delete Browsing History.

  3. Select the check box next to each category of information you want to delete.

  4. Select the Preserve Favorites website data check box if you do not want to delete the cookies and files associated with websites in your Favorites list.

  5. Click Delete. (This could take awhile if you have a lot of files and history.) Close IE8 and reopen a new window.

  6. In the new window, type the web address to Shutterfly.

In Firefox 4,

How to clear the cache The Firefox cache temporarily stores images, scripts, and other parts of websites while you are browsing.

XP Pro desktop: I open web page and screen closes back to desktop

Could be either a virus or compatibility issue with an update. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Click in the SHOW UPDATES at the top of the screen. Scroll down until you find Windows Internet Explorer 7. Look for the newest date of Updates to IE. Uninstall the last update by clicking on it and selecting remove. Then test IE. If this does not work, look for the last Windows update and do the same.
