The microwave will only cook if I push up on the bottom of the door once it is shut. Otherwise, the door closes, lights work, timer counts down, but the microwave won't cook. I know the door needs to be re-aligned but I don't know how to do that or if it is something that is worth taking to a repair person - should I just scrap it and buy a new one?
If you re-align the door yourself, then you will still have to get the oven leak tested. Just making a door snug does not necessarily mean you have low leakage. Microwaves have such a short wavelength that they frequently behave in peculiar ways.

My microwave will not heat up its in a defrost mode. How do I change it?

This is probably due to a bad door switch, most likely the top one. The microwave got hot because the cooling fan was not running. If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info (as well as a text file which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems) at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your model number here: http://www3.sears.com/

When you hit Start, does the oven lamp come on but not the fan or turntable?
That would be a problem with the secondary (bottom) door interlock switch or its mount.
This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or occasionally a problem on the control panel.
Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside. Its continuity must be checked.
Door
switch or mount trouble can be caused by slamming the door or by
opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.
There
are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches
and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.
The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.
Sometimes
it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate
just out of position. This tab
can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.
One test that sometimes helps is to gently lift up (and/or push down) on the door or
handle as you try to start it. If it works or tries to work, then it's
a door switch mount or door alignment issue.

you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical

So the oven lamp comes on but the turntable and internal cooling fan do not?
If that is incorrect, please reply back and correct me.
If that's the scenario you have, then you have a bad primary interlock (bottom door switch) or its mount is broken or loose.
