We have a Miele G851 SC (dishwasher) that has been used maybe 10 times since new in the past three years. Usually it is just an expensive dish rack for drying. But the last time we tried using it (this weekend) it fills with water, sits for 10 minutes or so, and the intake/drain light flashes in perpetuity. There is adequate pressure, the intake screen has been cleaned (it wasn't dirty), and the drain screen has been cleaned (also not very dirty). I removed the bottom cover and there isn't any water/moisture in the bottom pan (so it's not the "waterproof system" float). It is filling adequately and it is draining quickly and properly. Nevertheless, I tried pouring in an extra half-gallon of water after it started filling hypothesizing that perhaps the fill valve was shutting off too soon and the water level sensor, if there is one, thought there wasn't enough water. It exhibits the same behavior during all cycles. I noticed that as it is sitting after it has filled and the water has shut off there is a soft click accompanied by a soft humming coming from the the control panel. It is on for 15 seconds, then off for 15 seconds. On then off. On off. Then the intake/drain light comes on and flashes forever. Any suggestions for what to do next besides a scheduling a costly service call?
Hi Dadcar, Your main wash pump has seized (or stuck). Disconnect machine from power & water, Tip machine on its back. Remove screws that hold the bottom tray on. Remove hoses to main motor, remove electrical connections & remove motor (one screw that holds motor is actually on the outside back of the machine(you will see what I mean). Try to rotate (unstick) the motor (this can sometimes be done by spraying a bit of WD40 and trying to rotate the impellor with a pencil (careful not to break any of the fins on the impellor. If you cannot rotate it, then a new motor will be required. Replace back in machine in reverse to removal. Good luck...I hope the motor turns for you. PS Whilst you haven't used the machine very much, this in itself is a problem and can cause motors & pumps to stick, and seals to perrsh. Try to use the machine at least once a month. Kind regards

I Have the same problem on the G 851 sc. The quickie temporary solution is to turn it off, switch to the rinse & hold mode and let that drain the excess dishwasher water for a minute or so before it starts to rinse. Then you can turn it off again & restart the DW if needed.

I have the Miele G832SC Touchtronic. I had tyhe same problem with water at the bottom of the dishwasher the the intake/drain valve was lit. I cleaned all of the filters to no avail. I went back to the user guide under maitenance/ Cleaning Drainpump and Non return Valve. The value under the bottom blade has a medal clip to the drain pump. I almost backed out becasue the clip was difficult to snap over and that is all I need is to mess things up more. I got the clip open, took out the part stated in the manual, rinsed it under the sink and a big piece of broken glass fell out. I put everything back and at first the dishwasher still showed the blinking Intake/Drain. I turned the dishwasher on and off a couple of times and finally the light went away and I had that wonderful sound of a machine washing the dishes instead of me!

Had the same problem on a G686 SCI Plus which had been in storage for about a year. The water was Draining (this is the first thing the dishwasher does when on cycle) it was then filling but after it had filled it would make a click and humming noise for 1 min before putting the inlet/drain light on.
REALLY EASY to fix!!!! Turn the machine on its side and take the bottom pannel off (four screws). The main motor is the big one at the back of the machine i got my little finger (it was a tight fit) between the back of the machine and the large main motor and turned the cooling blades a few times which turns the shaft. I then sprayed the rubber grommet/shaft with WD40, this was accessed though a plastic channel looks like it there for exactly this purpose, towards the front of the motor.
Thats it !! it now works!!! its a big motor but i guess it has no torque! Easy!

that was great advice. our mashine has been working very hard for about 10 years. we,ve had the occasional intake/drain cut out. which was normally easiely fixed by checking the outlet pipe that got blocked at the sink inlet and or cleaning all the bits inside the washing chamber. this time that didn't lead me anywhere. after checking the water supply ( ok) I laid the mashine on it's side because my hoses run through the back.
I looked at the big motor and found the driveshaft between motor and impeller housing.
my fingers where too big to fit between the back of the motor and the back panel to reach the
rotor blades inside .
I used a silver solder stick instead and moved the rotor carfully after using wd 40 on the driveshaft. the mashine came back on running after reconnecting

I had a similar problem with the "Intake/Drain" indicator on. Expect my system was draining but no water was comming in. I called a Service department and they told me Miele will help me over the phone. They did. They had me check the Code by Hitting a few buttons on my g851 sc. And told me that I would have to open the bottom up and look for a loose wire or something disconnected. It opened up very easily and within a few minutes I could see a broken hose,which caused a leak which activated the watersafe float. I replace the hose and it is working Perfectly as normal.
Call Miele at 800-843-7231. This just happened to me this morning on my 10 year old dishwasher. I called. They had me push a number of buttons, remove the filter and clear it out, then run the dishwasher again. It works great now!
We had our problem when our daughter became helpful to do dishes.
She accidentally used dishwashing liquid vs. dishwasher liquid,
causing a clog.
I called Miele at 800-843-7231 and they had us clear out the filter(s),
drain the liquid out of the washer and sponge and a little rinsing.
Hold down the "Start/Stop" button for several seconds, and the
drain's flashing light turns off (Yay!).
Start washer on "rinse and hold" and after a few seconds the washer
will fill up with water. Open the door, and pour about a cup of distilled
vinegar into the water. Let it run. Once it finishes, run the "rinse and
hold" cycle again.
Everything worked for us from that point on.

lubricant ( I believe it is of silicon type which I had purchased
before from a plumbing supplier) and lubricated the shaft and all
surfaces that rotate and are in contact with each other. I could feel
the whole assembly became much smoother to rotate. It is working fine
now. I thank you all for your useful info. I had also tried the trouble shooting
section in the manual to no avail.

I had a similar outcome to everyone else. I began with cleaning the filter as the maintenance part of the manual instructed, but no luck. At least it got a good cleaning though! Then I put the dishwasher on its side and followed Ian's instructions. I was able to unscrew the motor and wiggle it out enough to reach the motor blades. I sprayed the heck out of it with WD40 while spinning to really get it in there. I waited for my husband to get home to help me lift it back up and voila! It is working. We rarely used our dishwasher so I think this was causing the issue. The only reason it was noticed is because of a home inspection while selling the home. I'm so glad I could repair it instead of shelling out $500 for a new one. Thank you, Internet!
Thanks for all the contributors above ... I managed to fix problem. I turned my machine onto its side and unscrewed the bottom plate. I located the drain pump ... I managed to detach it from the washing machine ... I pushed the pump around with my finger. When I put it back together ... then it all worked. Not sure how / why it works ... but it does :)
I had the same problem described above with the intake/drain error. Cleaned out the non return valve, the drain pump, ect.. with no luck. I then followed the advice above of unsiezing the motor with a pencil followed by oiling with WD40

that resolved the issue and my dishwasher has been working fine for over a year. Now, the intake/drain light came on again. This time it was intermintant from time to time until finally the DW does not go past the first 30 seconds after the drain pump stops. None of the above steps seem to work, however, I was able to get the DW to run a for the first cycle once or twice. Could this be because the motor is dead? Or do you think there is a blockage that I am not able to find. Any help would be appreciated.

Our Miele G 842SC Plus Novotronic is about 6 years old. Recently started exhibiting inability to run a cycle:
At start of cycle would run drain, then add water as per normal, then stop the cycle and light the intake/drain error light. A couple of times, turning it off and then on again got it working a proper cycle. But that didn't last long.
Checked/cleaned intake filter, drain and non-return ball valve to no avail.
THIS ADVICE WAS GREAT! It was the only link we found discussing a seized main motor (circulation pump). Exactly as described here, tipped dishwasher on side we were able to loosen the seized part with a poke from a screwdriver, and then apply WD-40 through the little chamber.
My 10 year old G848sci had the same problem after a month or 2 of non-use. The unit would drain then I'd hear a noise and the intake/drain light would start to flash and it would just go dead. I followed the instructions above, removed the unit, carefully removed all the water with a turkey baster (remember to remove the no return valve before you tip the unit over as there's a lot of water that'll drain out from above that valve). I took off the large bottom panel with the 4 screws and at first couldn't find the fan wheel by the large motor in back. It took me a while to get brave enough to take the set screw out behind the motore at the back of the unit. But when I did I was able to see in back of the motor and saw the wheel. With a screwdriver I pushed on it and snap, it went from frozen to free. WHen I put everything back the DW was working perfectly!
I ran into the same Intake Drain problem with my Miele G851 SC Plus. When I removed the motor assembly from the machine, I noticed some debris stuck in the fins of the impellor. which I also cleaned. I lubricated the shaft and the plastic bushing with LPS1.
Now the machine is working fine.
I had a good look at the impellor but could not figure out how to remove it from the shaft on the motor. I looks like it is either pressure fit or has some adhesive holding it in place.
Luckily this did the trick.

After a few months of fine operations, my Miele G851 SC has started acting up again.
I have opened the machine once again.
Impeller is clean and not jammed.
Lubricated the motor with machine lubricant.
I checked the air gap hose for blockages and nothing.
Inspected all hoses for possible blockages or leaks.
When I contacted Miele, they refused to walk me through the codes. They only wanted to send their technician at a fee out when I already have the machine apart.
Would someone have either the service manual or code reading instructions?
That way I can figure out which sensor is causing me grief.

Crytech's approach also works for same problem on Miele G640 series. Like
dadcar I followed the troubleshooting steps described in the manual to
no avail. They were all to do with water inlet/outlet issues, and
instinct said this wasn't the root cause. So it proved.
I tackled our machine as outlined, but noting the
modifications offered in dadcar's reply. Couldn't really get access to
the impellor, but found there was a vent between it & the motor
itself. Through this I was able to reach the shaft with a small
screwdriver & gently get it to turn.
On reassembly & test, I thought at first that the problem would
reoccur. Just as I was about to curse myself for having forgotten to
lubricate with WD40, there was an audible clunk & the motor kicked
in. Hooray! An expensive service saved. Many thanks to you both.
P.S. My experience supports dadcar's observation of a weak starting torque.

It was just as you said, and now working fine. Two things: I laid the dishwasher on its side instead of back because the hoses were coming out of the back and I didn't want to stress them, and it wasn't necessary to disconnect the motor from the hoses or wiring. To remove the four screws jolding the motor to the pump body, it looked like the entire mechanical assembly would have to be removed from the tub because two of the screws weren't accessible. After removong the one screw from the back of the motor, I could pull it out just enough to gain access to the back of the motor, then I pushed gently on the cooling fins with a screwdriver. I could feel that the rubber seal has bound to the motor shaft, but it freed itself with very little pressure. The motor must not have very much starting torque.

We are having a similar problem. The water is not draining out of our Meile 851. The intake/drain light comes on and the dishwasher stops. We have done all the things suggested in the manual. There are no kinks in the drain hose, we have cleaned the filters and the drain pump and the non-return valve. None were dirty or clogged as this appliance is in a vacation and gets used very little. The dishwasher drain hose is connected to our snikerator in sink disposal and that is working and draining fine. Any thoughts?
Miele GS851 Drain light on and not draining. Turn off power form circuit breaker. Remove all dirty dishes. Take out shelf and rack. Take out stianless steel filter. Remove the drain pipe that have a metal wire ( Pull straight up and till out - It is very hard to pull out but it does pull out ) Place a lot of towel on the floor ( it will be a lot of water ) Till the dishwasher at the side. Remove the four philip screws from the four corners. Remove the motor from the back with a HEX screw on the back of the panel. Tilt the motor out. Spread with WD40 inside the rim of the fin blade. Give the fin blade couple tens of turns until it is free up. Reverse all the procedure.
