Horizontal Black Bars on HD channels?

I have a 4 year old 42" Dell HD TV. I have had no problems with it until now. My 2 year old daughter got her hands on the remote. Now I have horizontal black bars on the top and bottom of my screen when watching HD channels. I have tried changing the picture using the "size" button to toggle between standard, full screen and wide but nothing seems to work. Also, now non-hd channels fill up the whole screen where the didn't before. This happens when using the tv in DVI mode connected to a comcast HD box. When I watch blue ray dvds on HDMI mode, it fills the whole scrren. Please let me know if you know what I am doing wrong. Thanks a lot in advance.

Actually you should select Full Screen for what you need - it's the best setting if you don't mind the normal images being stretched. Wide will also work but sometimes the normal images will appear normal, not stretched - the image format here is done by the internal trigger from the signal.
The reset is for the image quality only, the format will be left untouched since there is no default setting.

A broadcaster will transmit an HD channel in 1 format. This may be 720p or 1080i, both of which are HDTV formats. HDTV formats have an aspect ratio of 16:9. SDTV or standard definition broadcast have an aspect ratio of 4:3. Because not all content is record in an HD format (ex: Judy Judy), the broadcast is faced with 2 options. #1, stretch the 4:3 picture do that it fills the 16:9 canvas. #2, simple place black side bars on each side of the 4:3 image. What you are seeing is the latter of the 2 options. You will notice a change during the evening programming. The bars are only there when the content is not HD. You can use the WIDE feature of your TV to stretch the picture so that it fills the screen, just like broadcaster option #1 above.

Black side bars on hd channels

You may have to refer to the instruction manual for details.

There should be in the menu set-up an option to set the aspect ratio for the different broadcast modes. Normaly, when viewing a 4:3 picture on an HD 16:9 set, the sides will be cut off, otherwise the picture will be stretched or compensated.

Picture shifts to left

I had the offset left issue for non-HD channels with my Panasonic 42" plasma, using Comcast HD cable box. Went into the configuration menu (to get there with the newer Comcast boxes, you have to turn the box off, then hit the menu button on the box immediately after). You will see on the menu a resolution (probably says 1080i), then below it a "4:3 override". Our said 480i. When I changed it to "none", so that it stayed 1080i, it worked! It also works by selecting 480p, but then the picture is stretched.

Line accross top of the screen with flashing black and white boxes

Thin white dashes on top of screen is PERFECTLY NORMAL. It is nothing wrong with the TV, it is the broadcast. What you are seeing is the very bottom of the timecode running. It doesn't happen all of the time or all channels. It usually happens with old 4:3 commercials predating "Digital TV." This is mentioned in your Users Manual. You should be able to adjust the horizontal/vertical position in the menu settings.
