Try to download some free DVD player programs on your computer so that you don't have to deal with the annoying codec issue. You should download another video player program which can support most common codec packs. You could try Leawo Blu-ray Player which can play both Blu-ray and DVD discs.

DVD Codec

Windows media player will play very few DVD's on it's own. It needs to work in conjunction with a decoder. You can find a decoder, ie... Power DVD, WinVid, InterVid, etc..., at Dell's support site or filehippo.com. I use Power DVD on mine with no problems. Also, the configuration that you have will not have a noticeable or any effect on videos. They will play fine, once you have a decoder.
