Trying to help this older lady with a emerson tv/vcr combo. She has no manual with set. Setting up to record same station everyday at same time. VCR will record but when playing back she only gets sound no picture. Even tried to play a movie and no good picture. She is on cable does tv needs to be on a certain channel to play back

You can try this: Connect your DirecTv to VCR with Red/White/Yellow cables. Then the VCR to your TV with the same type of cables. Make sure the VCR is set to the video input, not the tuner. Turn your TV to the correct video input. Get the program ready on the DVR as if you were going to watch it. Press record on the VCR and then play on the DVR. At the end of the program, press stop on both. You may have a problem with the video recording properly. Some stations broadcast with copyright protection.

I need to know how to set it for record. I've tried setting for a time to start and stop, but for some reason it will not record. I have cable and the cable wire is attched to the tv/vcr.

1. turn on what ever you want set up
2. press and hold set up tell light blinks or stays lit
3. push what you are trying to set up t.v. or dvd ect.
4. push power on/off tell it turns off
5. push enter when it turns off

I don't know if you guys even need this advice anymore, as it's 1-2 years late, but if your universal remote has a VCR setting, the Emerson 13" CRT TV/VCR combo I have operates under that mode.
The code I used was 002. These may also work: 278, 184, 479, 000, 121, 211, 037, 043, 061, 208
Remember, program your remote as if you were setting up a VCR (and NOT a TV). For instance, on my GE universal, I hold the "code search" button down until I get a steady light. I hit VCR, and then I entered 002. Works like a charm.
