I had this happen with a Compaq CQ70....The palmrest has to be removed and in most cases the retainer for the button can be pushed back into position from underneath. At the very least, the button assembly may have to be replaced. Is it still possible to activate the left click even though the button is collapsed? If not, the problem maybe the collapse of the actual button assembly on the circuit board under the plastic button assembly. Below is the link to the service manual for that laptop.
