Update drivers will not recognize the dynex 56k v.92 modem
Dear Ray, Dell 8600 does not have Win 7 drivers. Most of the hardware which doesn't have Win 7 drivers run on Windows Vista drivers mostly. Install the Windows Vista drivers and obviously Windows shall show you a message of Driver Not Digitally signed, ignore that error and Continue with your installation.
I personally had a manual of Dynes 56k v.92 modem manual and in their official manual they have official Vista Drivers but not Windows 7 drivers and I think that Vista drivers shall work flawlessly on Windows 7. If you don't have Vista Drivers, then Google it and also you need 32 Bit drivers not 64 Bit as Dell 6800 does not support 64 Bit.
Sometimes you can use the Vista drivers for a device. Need more info, drivers 32 or 64bit?

make sure that your tcp/ip networking is set to 'Obtain IP address automatically'.
Power modem first , then laptop. Make sure that you are using the right cable for connection between modem and comp.

it will not be compatible, the slot on the right side is an ExpresssCard Slot.
You might want to try a USB modem

You can download the drivers from Dell WEB site, the support download page. Make sure you select your model laptop, better still type in the Service Tag number, it is printed on the label on the bottom of the laptop. Also make sure you select the Windows XP or Vista version of the driver for your Windows operating system.

I would check network connections in your control panel first and make sure your wireless connection is enabled. Next I would go to System in control panel and then go to device manager and check to see if the drive for the wireless is installed. May want to try here for the Driver download.

I used windows vista 32/64 drivers on a windows 7 Pro N 64bit upgrade I did on a old Gateway MX6421(Born in 2005) I cross- referenced the hardware to a HP machine, in my case was a Conexant Audio and a PCI Modem, and downloaded the drivers and modified a few lines of code and made them Windows 7 compatible install . the devices work perfectly.
