You can most likely recover most of the photos using a computer and some programs.. Plug the memory stick to computer and download this program:

It sounds like the memory stick needs to be formated in a way that the phone can read it. Also, PC Suite is a basic application that is really for backing up txt messages or contacts to a computer. I'd try formating the memory stick on the phone...then try and put music, pictures, etc on it.
