The Garmin Nuvi 855 uses a Lithium-ion battery. It is a very clean system and does not need priming as nickel-based batteries do. The 1st charge is no different to the 5th or the 50th charge.

In other words there is no memory effect with these batteries and it should be safe to charge it for as long as you like on the first charge. I would estimate 4 hours will give you a full charge if you wish to do this from the outset.

I have the problem solved I at first had this problem after about 5 minutes of messing with my GARMIN NUVI and having many electronic gadget I thought about diffrent buttons to hit at the same time heres how you charge your NUVI with a computer and a usb cable

1st: make sure your NUVI is OFF then plug in the usb cable from the computer to the NUVI, after you hear your computer ding from new device connected, and the NUVI displays the computer icon move to step 2

step 2: if you have xp go to START and MY COMPUTER. with vista its START then COMPUTER button on the right side

step 3: with MY COMPUTER window open hold the NUVI power switch to the ON position and RIGHT CLICK the NUVI device logo (blue triangle) and select EJECT .. ( DON;T HIT SAFiLY REMOVE)

step 4: when you see GARMIN display on the screen you can letgo of the power button on the NUVI ****** if you unplugthe usb it will display message stating EXTERNAL POWER LOST SWITCHING TO BATTERY POWER***** while it is plugged to the computer the battery meter will disaper

Merritt, Your Garmin Nuvi does not have a charging indicator similar to say your Cell ph. Simply a battery charge indicator scale. Normal full charge time is approximately 3 to 4 hr. If you looking to ensure your unit is in fact charging Plug in & then remove the connection, Your unit will pop-up a screen to request if you wish to remain on battery power. I hope this helps you.

I can't give you a source of the problem but I can give you at least a temporary solution. Turn the unit on without the cord attached. After it comes up, press on the battery button for 10 seconds until the diagnostic screen comes up. Plug the cord in and press Exit and the unit should work while it charges. You will not be able to use it with the computer using this method, however. To do that you need to plug it in while either without powering it on or after it is powered up normally.
