SOURCE: briggs & stratton 550 / surges, gas hog

check your air filter. If it's clogged, the engine will spool up to keep from dying, run for about 15 seconds, then it will happen again. If that's it, just clean the air filter. Solved my problem

There are several additives on the market for gasoline, but only a few of them actually help anything. If the additive is relatively cheap to buy, don't expect much results. Gas that hasn't been treated with fuel stabilizer that is a month or more old loses its volatility and can cause issues with engine performance, small and large.
All you guys on the block need to make sure you're using fresh gas, Clean SAE 30 Weight Oil for the Briggs Engines and good clean air filters. Also you can tell when gas is going stale..it starts smelling kind of like turpentine....a smell you'll never forget.

Make sure you have fresh clean fuel in the mower. Has the mower been setting for a while? Make sure your air cleaner is not plugged. Try starting with fresh fuel and the air cleaner off. Let me know if the cord tries to pull back or you have hit anything with the mower blade recently.

It sounds like your timing's off. Take the sheetmetal cowl off and remove the flywheel on top. Check your shear pin and replace if necessary. It sounds like there is some offset there. The shear pin should get you back running right. Best regards, --W/D-- please feel free to rate this solution! Thanx!

Carburetor adjustment

it would be a lot easier if you take the cover off the top of lawn mower.
find the carb, it usually sits near gas tank, there should be a screw sticking out of it. tighten until it runs normal. also adjust the air intake/ throttle arm on carb

My lawn mower doesn't start and when it does, smoke comes out of exhaust

you may need to change the oil and/or empty the old gas and replace it with new.

This thing happens when you don't take care of your lawn mower for too long.
