All of a sudden some of my tapes will not playback and others will??

My husband taped a game, like he has done before. He came home for me to transfer to a DVD. When I went to play back tape there was nothing there. I put in a tape that I had viewed before and still nothing. I then tried another tape and it plays just fine. I started going through other tapes and have found 4 tapes that will not play back. I know that no one but myself has viewed or touched two of the four tapes. I did not erase these two tapes, I am the only one who has touched these two tapes. I noticed that the tapes that play will register numbers at the top of screen "oh00m00s00t". The numbers change as I go forward and rewind the tapes. The 4 tapes that do not play back stay at zeros when I forward and rewind them. I am just a beginer with this camera. I can not find anything in manual to help me. Could a setting have been changed to cause a problem like this.

My Panasonic PV-GS500 is having the same problem with a Fujifilm tape. Others playback fine. This one just sits as the numbers stay at 0000...backward or forward. Are these like the old VCR tapes that you can manually rewind using a pen?

One possible reason this is happening would be that you are looking at a portion of the tape that hasn't been recorded on yet. Since there's no way to tell how far you're past the recorded part, rewind the tape to the beginning, then try again. That way you'll be sure you are starting from the very front. This assumes, of course, that your previous recording isn't somehow in between two blank sections of the tape.

While it is rewinding, you may want to watch the LCD screen to see if the numbers start counting down. But again, if not sure, let it rewind all the way to the beginning.

You've already tried other tapes in this camera that work, so it shouldn't be the camera. If you rewind the tape in question to the front, try it in another camera (take it to a video store and try it out in one of their demo cameras). If it's a user friendly store you might even take a working tape and your camera (be sure to check it in at the front door and have it labeled so they know it's yours when you come out). Good luck.

I have been experiencing the same problem with my Panasonic PV-GS120. I don't know the root cause or real solution, but I found if I keep playing the tape, rewind->play->rewind->play, eventually I would get the image back normal. I think I would try to clean up header with a header cleaner to see if it helps or not. If not, I plan to submit a request to Panasonic support to check out possible solution. Good luck.

Not all cd tapes play clearly out of 12 tapes ,4 sound ok ,8 soundwrak

Are these all commercial pre-recorded tapes? Or are they tapes that were recorded at home? Is the tape deck one that the tape loads in from the short side and must be flipped around to play the other side....or is it one that the tape loads in with the tape facing in and is auto-reversing? Pre-recorded commercial tapes should work on most machines without problems. Home recorded tapes can be a problem, especially on the type of deck that the tape must be swapped over to play the reverse side. Many users use C90 or C120 tapes to home record. These tapes are thinner than normal tapes and are prone to getting overly tight and then can break and/or stretch. This causes jamming in the deck and distortion of the playback.

Having problem with sound playback from TDK Metal 8 tapes

I don't remember where I read it, but somewhere like this site.
Just as you start the play back, give your camera a bump with the heal of your hand. This has worked a couple times, and the issue seems to be with just the metal tapes. My husband was a bit appalled until it worked. It might not solve the issue long term, but I was wanting to recover baby footage so I wanted to just get it done.

Having a hard time connecting various audio components

Yes, it is a little tricky...

1) CD Changer (output) -> CD input on Amp

this is tricky... this will allow you to record to your tape deck, and control the sound via the EQ:
2) Tape Deck (tape out / recout) -> TAPE PLAYBACK on EQ
3) Tape RecOut on EQ -> Tape 1 Playback on Amp
4) Amp Tape 1 RecOut -> Tape Deck Playback / Input / RecIn
in essence, your creating a loop starting from the tape deck, going to the eq, then to the amp, then back to the tape deck to record.

Your EQ has another set of LINE IN and LINE OUT - use the second Tape 2 on the amp to create another loop. This will
allow you to control the EQ for any of the other sources.
5) LINE IN on EQ -> Tape 2 RecOut
6) Tape 2 Playback on Amp -> LINE OUT on EQ

5) Radio Tuner (output) -> Tuner input on Amp
6) DVD/VCR Combo Output -> AV/AUX on Amp

7) PC Computer... you don't have room for this. You can either use the PHONO input, and you'll have to purchase a Line Level Phono Converter
or, get a Y cable and split the signal and share with some other source.

Hope this helps.

Tapes won't Playback in other deivice

Hello! If the recorded tapes playback ok on the camera and not ok on another devices, you need to readjust the playback on this camera using a tape which playbacks fine on the other devices. This means that is a small difference on the tape transport. So when the supply and takeup post rollers readjusted and the audio and video playback are good, then your camera is fine.

No playback

Even though my husband cleaned the head with a q-tip and alcohol, I decided to purchase a cleaning tape. I popped it in and it worked in less than 15 seconds! It was expensive, $18, but not nearly expensive as a new camera!

Cassette playback

Hi, I am brand new to this site. So I may not be very good. However your prob sounds like one I had a few years back. I solved mine by using two pencils, one in each hub.
Then winding manually from one to the other. This is quite time consuming, but it worked for me. Hope this helps, if not, sorry for wasting your time.

Problems with playback of HI8 tapes...

What's happening is that the tape in the cassette is being chewed on one side by the camera's tape transporting mechanism during playback, hence the distorted image and sound. The mechanism might be damaged (misalignment) or just dirty. Try not to play other tapes on this unit because they will become permanently damaged. The best way is to find another camcorder (if cleaning does not help). Note that some old cassettes of long recording time will exhibit this behavior more often because of thinner tape used.

Bad playback quality

Some possible cause of lines, noise or pixelation during playback are: 1. Dirty heads on the recording machine. If the heads were dirty at the time of recording, the dirty heads didn't record a strong enough signal on the tape. The damage is done for this tape and recovery is unlikely. Best advice here is to use only premium grade new tapes and keep your camcorder clean by occasionally running a cleaning tape. 2. Physical tape damage. Any distortion of the tape will result in mistracking and subsequent loss of data. 3. Built up oxide deposits or other debris in the guidepost corners can also result in tape edge damage. Keep your machine clean! 4. Improper tape storage - Even short term exposure to high temperatures over 130 deg f. can permanently damage the tape. The black cassette housing readily absorbs the sun's infrared rays and internal cassette temperatures can soar even if left in direct sunlight on just a warm day. It doesn't take much heat to slightly distort the plastic shell or ruin the tape contained within. * Try other tapes to ensure the problem lies within the tape and not the camcorder. * If the problem becomes apparent on all tapes, try a head cleaner. After cleaning the heads, the tapes may not play cleaner if the recording was done while the heads were dirty.
