Panasonic cordless KXTG6541 answering machine won't work since the phone company disconnected voice mail
Hi there on this lovely nightt- Northenlights and all.
My first impression is that I am not surprised I think there is a connection between a voice mail and answering machine. I think you must reconnect.

Just to confirm this is a GE unit right?
You can try to unplug the unit for about 2 or 3 mins. then plug it back in see if you can retrieve now.
Normally as well the voice mail is provider specific so you might have to call your provider for information on retrieving it.

vonage gives you a personal voicemail. You should contact them and find out how to retrieve it first. If you have your companys voicemail on the panasonic you should also make sure that vonage voicemail get longer waiting time.
