HP Deskjet 6940 InkJet Printer Logo

HP Deskjet 6940 Series Printer: I'm on my second brand new color cartridge for this printer. The printer simply doesn't recognize that the cartridge is installed. Sometimes the color cartridge light blinks, I remove and re-insert the cartridge, and it stops blinking. It will only print black and white. Any suggestions?

SOURCE: Printer Toolbox Not Recognizing New Black Ink Cartridge

Pop out the cartridge and look inside the printer where the black cartridge goes. There may be punctures in the ribbon cable from the metal wire that rests against the catridge. I have lost 2 6940's to this problem.

SOURCE: HP Deskjet 6940 not printing after replacing ink cartridge

My HP Deskjet 6940 is not printing. The color (left) low ink light is dark and the black (right) low ink light is flashing. I replaced the black ink cartridge with a new one but the low ink light continues to flash. No tears/rips in the circuit strip and all the copper leads appear to be connected

SOURCE: The printer doesn't recognize the new original HP color cartridge

There is a small spring that holds the ink cartridge in the ink holder. You will see it stick out from the right hand side of the ink holder where the ink cartridge slides in. If that spring isn't being held to the ink holder by two plastic tabs, (I.E. the plastic tabs are broken) the printer will never recognize the cartridge. If the printer is still under warranty I would contact HP or an authorized repair center for HP. Both the black and color ink holder has this spring. I know of no way to repair this kind of breakage.

I am replacing the #97 color ink cartridge and my printer left ink icon blinks and doesn't appear to recognize the new cartridge

Is the cartridge "new" or "refilled" ?

Remove the ink-cartridge.
Turn the printer off.
Disconnect the AC power cord.
Reconnect the AC power cord.
Turn the printer on.
Re-insert the ink-cartridge, and be sure that it is "seated" fully and correctly.

I installed a new color inkjet cartridge on my HP Deskjet 6940 and I now get the message - The following print cartridge has a problem: Tri-color. Reinstalling the old cartridge results in the same...

Mostly, printer cartridge error occurs when the printer head is unable to identify the cartridge properly. And the basic reason behind this is that the cartridge is improperly attached. To reattach the cartridge, turn on the lid of the printer and then remove the cartridge from the printer head. Check the cartridge to make sure that there are no scratches or other damaged parts that can contribute to a printer cartridge error report. Take note that the cartridge should not be left open for more than 30 minutes; otherwise the ink will start to dry up and the cartridge will get clogged.

Which lights for ink mean what? I know the triple is color, but there are 2 single lights and only one spot for black. It is full but the first light stays lit and it won't print.

The left lamp is for color cartridge, the right is for black. If one of them blinking mean the ink cartridge missing or printer not recognize it.

Printer Toolbox Not Recognizing New Black Ink

The Deskjet 6940 will only show ink level for original HP cartrdgies. Refilled or reman cartridges will show as empty or unknown in the toolbox. This is not an issue with the driver, the cartrdige itself has information that it has been previously used and this is not resettable. You can continue to print with a cartrdige that has unknown ink levels, you will just not get low ink warnings.
