Try making sure your getting gas to the carb, and to the spark plug if you can choke it and try to start it but fails check the spark plug if its wet with gas then the plug is not firing or your ignition coil is dead also check for debri or foreign matter in the gas lines and filters but if it has set for awhile most of the time the jet become clogged in the carb but most importantly make sure the gas is good and free water dead gas can cause a problem of that nature.hope this helps.

John Deere LA145...it will fire up and immediately die and then won't start again. What should I do?

Usually this symptom means a clogged filter, gas tank outlet tube is plugged or a clogged needle valve. But if it smells gassy it is probably not starving, but may be running too rich. If it does not smell gassy then it's probably a fuel delivery problem. Sometime rubber fuel hoses can swell up inside and restrict flow.
