Firmware upgrades may erase all previous settings to your router's configuration. Before upgrading your firmware, make sure to record your settings. 1. Unplug and disconnect all computers from the router except for one. This computer must be plugged into the router directly. There can be no other network activity (wired and wireless) on the router during the upgrade, so be sure to power off all other computers. 2. Go to http://www.linksys.com/download 3. Select the model number of the Linksys router you have. Make sure to select the correct router version as well, as firmware upgrades frequently vary by version. You can find your router version underneath your router after the model number. For example, ?BEFW11S4 ver. 2?. 4. Click the Downloads for this Product button. 5. Once you arrive on the download page, click the Firmware button. 6. After the firmware page opens, click the link that says ?Click here to download the latest firmware...? and download the firmware file to your computer. 7. Once you download the firmware Zip file, unzip it. If you do not have an unzipping program, go to http://www.winzip.com and download WinZip, which will allow you to unzip the file. 8. After unzipping the firmware files, one of them will be called TFTP.EXE. Double click on it. 9. When the ?Upgrade Firmware? window opens, you will have three prompts. The ?Server? field is for the IP address of your router; by default this would be 192.168.1.1. 10. Enter the routers password into the ?Password? field; by default the password is admin. 11. Browse for the file in the Firmware Upgrade utility program by clicking on the button next to file with the '?' symbol on it. Look for the file named 'code.bin' in the folder where the firmware files were extracted to. 12. Highlight the code.bin file and click on the Open button to direct the TFTP loader program to put that file into the "File" box. 13. The full path should be displayed [example: c:\linksys\code.bin]. 14. Click on the Upgrade button to begin the upgrade process. 15. The upgrade should take about 1 minute, and you will be prompted after the upgrade is complete and successful. If you are still having troubles, contact Linksys Technical Support.

Lost wireless-B light after firmware upgrade

I own the same router. In the back of the router there is a little red button you can push with a pen or the like. This should restore the factory default settings on the router. That should rollback the firmware upgrade and solve your problem. You will need to setup your router again but it should not be a paper weight anymore.

Linksys Wireless B BEFW11S4

That router should have a small hole on the back of the router (near the power plug, I believe) with a button inside. Use a paperclip to hold that button down for 5 to 10 seconds, then reset the power to the router, and it should be back to it's defaults.

If that doesn't work, the firmware is probably corrupted, and there's not a whole lot you can do about it.

Charter High-Speed Cable and the BEFW11S4 Version 4

To resolve this problem, you will need to upgrade your router's firmware. Click ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/befw11s4_v4_v1.50.14_code.bin and download the file to your Desktop or My Documents folder (the link is to v1.50.14 firmware code). Once the BIN file has been downloaded, follow these instructions to upgrade the router's firmware: NOTE: Before upgrading your router's firmware, please make sure that the procedure is being performed by a computer that is connected directly to the Router with an Ethernet cable and not a wirelessly connected computer. Accessing the Router's Setup Page 1. Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape. 2. When the browser window opens, go to the Address bar and type in the router's IP Address and click on the Go button (192.168.1.1 is the default IP address of Linksys Routers). 3. A window will appear prompting for a ?User Name? and a ?Password?. Leave the ?User Name? field blank, and type in the router's password and click on the OK button to login (admin is the default password). 4. The router's web-based ?Setup? utility should then load. Upgrading the Router From the router?s ?Setup? page, locate the Linksys logo in the upper left-hand corner of the page. Follow the instructions below depending on which logo matches your specific screen: If the logo matches the image above ("Linksys - A Division of Cisco Systems, Inc."), follow these steps. If not, skip to the next logo version. 1. Click on the Administration tab. 2. When the ?Administration? page loads, click on the Firmware Upgrade sub-tab. 3. When the ?Upgrade Firmware? page loads, click on the Browse button, and browse to the location where the firmware file was downloaded (and possibly extracted) to. 4. After browsing to the correct location, select the firmware file and click on the OK button. 5. Click on the Upgrade button to upgrade the router's firmware. If the logo matches the image above ("Linksys"), follow these steps: 1. Click on the Help tab. 2. When the "Help" page loads, click on the Upgrade Firmware link. Internet connection problems using the BEFW11S4

If you are having problems connecting to the Internet, follow the following steps: 1. Internet service: Check with your Internet Service Provider to make sure that service is active. You usually can determine a good link to the service if you can bypass the BEFW11S4, plug directly into the ISP modem unit, and get a good connection. This will narrow the issue down to either the service, or the router. 2. Network cables: Verify that the network cables that connect the network together are plugged into the current ports as they should (modem into the WAN/Internet port, computers into 1, 2, 3, or 4). Also try to change some or all of the network cables that attach to devices coming from the BEFW11S4. You may have bad cables. 3. Router configuration: Your router may not be configured to use your Internet service properly. While plugged into your provider?s modem and able to get online, run the bundled Router Setup Wizard CD-ROM program that came with your router. This will configure the router automatically for you. Note: this program must be executed on the main computer when plugged directly into the providers modem unit and able to get on the Internet 4. Manual configuration: If the Setup Wizard CD-ROM from Step 2 fails to configure your router, you may need a manual configuration. While plugged into the provider modem unit and able to get online, visit http://kb.linksys.com, and search for the name of your Internet service provider for detailed instructions on manual configurations. 5. Router firmware: Upgrade your router to the latest firmware version. Please go to http://www.linksys.com/download to download the latest version of firmware for your product. After the upgrade, be sure to reset the router, by holding in the router?s reset button for 30 seconds and reconfiguring it for use with your service (Step 3 or Step 4). 6. Malfunctioning equipment: You may have a faulty network adapter, or a bad router. Please contact Linksys Technical Support for further assistance.
