I have a Dell Dimension

This is one of 3 possible problems. Either your motherboard has gone bad, your power supply has gone bad, or the connections from the power supply to the motherboard are not secure.

When strating up my computer

Have you added any new hardware recently? Especially on factory systems if you start adding stuff the power supply is not really big enough for a lot of upgrades. Could be a failing power supply. Take off the side panel and see when you turn the system on that the CPU fan is spinning. Make sure the heat sink is on the CPU and has not falling off. It that does not work. Try to disconnect everything from the motherboard except"power supply, cpu and cpu fan, one stick of ram, video(whether on board video or a card). You can leave the power button on the front panel plugged in. Try starting it up and see if you get bios. Slowly start plugging everything in until the error occures. You really need to use anti-static wrist strap when working around the motherboard, but if you don't have one just constantly touch the metal case of power supply(and make sure the power is unplugged from the wall outlet).

Where can I find a replacement dvd/r+w drive for

You should be able to find one in any electronics store (Staples, etc.), online stores, ebay, pretty much anywhere hardware is sold. I believ the 5150 came with a PATA drive but there are SATA ports on most boards.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Hi, Everytime I turn on my

This sounds like it can not mount your boot file from hard drive which needs to load windows. Sometimes this will happen if you leave a floppy, cd or some kinda usb flash drive in computer when rebooting and it does not happen always. I would try to boot in to safe mode as message is saying. To boot in to safe mode modet computers use F8 key. Turn off your pc and then as soon as you push power button start tapping key F8 located on top of keyboard. You can stop once you get screen that says Advanced startup menu. Choose option Safe mode and press enter. You will need to use arrows to make selection. Once you choose safe mode wait for the loading to be done and then choose ether your windows name or Administrator. Once in safe mode you will get error message just ignore it and press yes. When windwos comes up try to do a restore to previous date. Go to start-programs-accessories-system tools-system restore.in system restore choose restore to earlier time and on the calendar choose date that your computer was working fine. I usually go even week prior to when computer stopped working. Your data will be saved but if you have installed some programs you might have to reinstall them. Hope this helps.

I have a Dell Dimension

There are several reason for this issue.
1. Power switch on CPU(Tower) might get locked while pressing.
2. SMPS might be old one.

1. Need to check the Power switch with the help of Multimeter.
2. Need to change the SMPS and check whether it is working.

Computer wont turn on

"Then I came across the recommendation to check the USB ports for damage. Saw some of the pins bent inside the port. Once I fixed them, the computer powered back on as normal! Small fix for big problem. Cheers - Parveen"

My wife's Dell E510 also suffered from the orange blinking light on front, and would not power up this morning. I had just purchased a new power supply for another computer and swapped it with the Dell's. To no avail... Put the Dell back together and still no luck with a start. So I came across your site and remembered that recently the 6y'o had jammed a USB port in the front of the Dell and after bending that USB port back into shape every thing works again!

Who would have thought that a free fix would be so easy!

Thanks!!!

Cannot get any sound

Make sure your speakers are pluged in the green socket at the rear of your computer case.
Secondly, use the driver disk for your PC to install the Sound drivers, if you do not have them, serch for them on google. Download them and install. Either use Dell Dimension 5150 audio drivers in your search or the exact model of your mainboard.
Please take the time to rate my expertise.
Thanks

I cannot get my dell dimension to boot from a cd

are you getting error messages or it just completely passes by it? Is the disc you're using a bootable disc?

If it is just passing it by, first, verify that your disc drive is functional. If it isnt functional, replace the drive with a different one.

If it is functional place the disc in the drive and reboot. while its booting, press the F2 key when you see the blue Dell Logo. Look for something in there called Boot Sequence...Verify that the CD Drive is 1st on the list. If it isn't use the proper keystrokes to get it there...Exit setup SAVING changes...the machine will reboot and you should be able to boot from the disc

How to open the tower

Unplug all of your cords going to the tower, just for a safety factor. At the top of your tower, at the back you will see a latch, pull that latch and the side of the case will release, take the side of the case off and there is the inside of your computer.
