If you're using Windows,
Try using SYSTEM RESTORE to go back to a date where you were able to use your computer normally.
- Just click START
- Type SYSTEM RESTORE on SEARCH PROGRAMS AND FILES Bar
- Hit ENTER and then just follow the steps.
You can also try deleting the upper and lower filters for the CD ROM. It's like resetting it.
Warning: Before using this fix you should backup the registry. This can be done by selecting File --> Export from within the registry editor
1. Go to START --> RUN --> Type REGEDIT and hit ENTER
2. Navigate to the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. In the right pane look for these 2 values - UpperFilter and LowerFilter.
4. Delete the UpperFilter key by right clicking on it and choosing Delete and OK.
5. Repeat step 4 for the LowerFilter key.
6. Exit the registry editor and restart the computer.
If this doesn't work, contact your manufacturer to have them check the unit for you especially if it's still in warranty. This may be a hardware issue and will be needing replacement.
Hope this helps.

Could you please post back with more details? Since you didn't mention any specific details about the problem, it's hard to guess. I don't think you will like to receive assumed answers. Thanks and awaiting..

This sounds to me like your monitor has gone bad. Often times this is caused by the internal components (capacitors usually) going bad, or the back light burning out. Sometimes this can be repaired by replacing the bad capacitors or light, however it is usually more time and cost effective to find an inexpensive replacement monitor. I myself have had good experience with the service at www.compusa.com as well as things being reasonably priced. Hope this helps.

My computer says NTLDR is
The files necessary to boot Windows are corrupt or there has been a change to the drive configuration. To repair this you will need the installation CD or a windows ERD (emergency recovery disc) disc. If you can access the drive from a bootable disc try to perform a system restore from a recent restore point. If you use the install CD you can try the "repair" option and at the prompt type "fixboot". If unsuccessful retry and type "fixMBR". If unsuccessful you can try a repair install. The final option is a complete reinstall.

You can download the drivers from Dell WEB site, the supportdownload page. Make sure you select your model desktop or laptop, better still, type in the Service Tag number, it is printed on the label on the bottom of thelaptop and on the back or sides of a desktop. (If the Service Tag label ismissing then go into the BIOS setting and on one of the BIOS pages, the ServiceTag number will be displayed). This will open the page where the specificdrivers for your model computer are located. Also make sure you select theWindows XP or Vista version of the drivers for your Windows operating system.Click on this link to download the drivers: -

Dell dimension 5150 can not
Hi,
Eversince PC Restore has been put to Dell computers, it has been convinient for home users to reset their computers back to factory settings. This error indicates that the factory image settings pre-stored in the hard drive of your computer is corrupted already. What you need to do is to perform manual reinstallation of Windows. Assuming still have the Recovery Disks for your computer, you may follow the steps from this
LINK01.
If this computer was shipped before September 28, 1994, you may take advantage of its Lifetime Phone Support from a Dell Technical Representative. You may double check the shipped date of your computer from this
LINK02. Prepare your computer's Service Tag number that can be found at the back your desktop on a white sticker with a barcode on it then call
1-877-293-1197.
If you have lost your Recovery Disks, you may request these CDs by calling 1-877-293-1197.
I hope this works for you. Kindly reply for further assistance. Good Luck!

On turn on the numbers 1 and 3 show on the panel
Hello,
For those numbers the troubleshooting information says:
"Memory modules are detected, but a memory configuration or compatibility error exists."
Did you make any changes to your RAM modules or have them out for some reason?
This system has 4 memory slots. If you have mutiple memory modules I would try to replace them one at a time in the first slot. Try booting to see if it will. If it does, shutdown and add one more and do the same thing. You should be able to eliminate the problem module(s).

Wont turn on
I know this is an old post but for the sake of letting others know, I also had this problem with my Dimension 5150 power on button blinking amber and not responding, this was after only buying the machine in April 2006. I first took the base unit to PC World who told me the machine was knackered and i should invest in a new one, unhappy with that answer I contacted Dell who run through this whole process of pull this out, plug this in, power up, press the cd drive button etc.. etc.. all of this narrowed the fault down to a "faulty input/output panel" according to Dell, however i did some more testing of my own and found a small round flat silver battery on the circuit board, i simply popped this battery out gave it a clean popped it back in and my PC fired up first time and is now performing better than it ever has done. The only effect I can tell is that the computer date and time settings reverted to March 2006, which is easily corrected!
Computer will not boot up. Goes to blank screen
When this happens, you either have a hardware or bios problem. First thing to try is to start your computer and hit the F2 key to go into setup. This will be your BIOS, or Basic Input and Output Settings. You can go thru the tabs and see if you hard drive is recognized. Look under IDE configuration. If your hard drive is listed properly, then you motherboard is seeing your hard drive.
Then, go to the tab on the far right and look for reset bios or load system defaults. Sometimes, this will help you get by this problem.
If this does not make any changes, start your comptuer and hit the F8 key this time. This should give you a menu including start in safe mode, start in Last known good configuration. Try selecting last known good configuration and see if this works. If not, try starting in Safe mode.
IF none of this will work, then you probably have a hardware problem. Shut your computer down and open your case. Unplug every drive EXCEPT the hard drive. Try to start the computer. If this works, the shut the computer down and plug in one drive as a time until th computer will not start again. When this happens, you have found the bad drive. A CD or Floppy drive that goes bad will sometimes stop the computer from starting.
Try these suggestions and see if you can get past this. If you find this provides a solution for you, please remember to leave positive feedback for me.
Thank You,
Brian
My Dell Dimension 5150 has always had a loud fan
No. You can take apart the power supply, detach the fan, clean it, clean the power supply(capacitors, core), put it together and see if it makes the same sound.
Also check the fan of the CPU cooler, you may have to clean that too. But be careful when you remove the cooler from the CPU. You will need silica paste to protect the core of the processor. You can find it in small 5 grams packs. Clean the back of the cooler and the processor with some medicinal alcohol, let them dry and then put them back. Do not forget about the paste. It is a very important component in order to keep the processor at a decent temperature.
Also check if the graphics card has a fan. If so, clean it too.
Put everything back and it should work perfectly.
