Music files on MP3 player not playing due to license problem

This player was made before the advent of the DRM license system. You will have to use mp3 files or UNPROTECTED WMA's. DRM-license-protected WMA's - which is what most music services use - will not work on this player.

I am a rookie on the computer. I dont know how to

Mp3 players are WAY too complicated to tell you in a few simple steps how to get them to work.

The SA178 is completely incompatible with Vista - Philips has issued a warning on their website. If you do indeed have an SA178, don't even try to use it with your Vista-enabled computer.

If, by some chance, you have a different model GoGear that is compatible with Vista - you may have to go to Philips website first to get a key firmware upgrade for it to work properly.

This is all before you even begin.

Once you have verified whether it is Vista-compatible or not, below are help files that will aid you in using Windows Media Player to transfer music files to your device. If your music files are not already in Mp3 format AND they are NOT copy-protected, then you can download a free program like Media Monkey to convert the music files to mp3 format.

Here are the Windows Media Player help files:
The instructions in these pages, which are largely links, pertain to Windows Media Player 10 and 11 only.

Windows Media Player is made by Microsoft. The general help page for Windows Media Player is:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/default.mspx

Through this link, you can enter a variety of search terms that will help you find what you are looking for (exs.: “add files to my mp3 player”; “delete files from my mp3 player,” etc.)

Important Vocabulary:

The code word for “mp3 player” in Windows Media Player is “DEVICE” or “portable device”

The code word for adding files is “SYNC,” “syncing,” or “synchronizing”

The code word for copying files from CD is “RIP,” or “ripping”

The code word for files stored on both My Computer and my Mp3 player (when it is connected to the computer) is “LIBRARY”

To add files (SYNC) to your mp3 player using Windows Media Player 10:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/windowsmediaplayer/wmp10/harrison_wmp10.mspx

To add files (SYNC) to your mp3 player using Windows Media Player 11:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/sync.mspx

To delete files from your mp3 player using Windows Media Player 10:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/mediaadvice/0085.mspx#EDF

To delete files from your mp3 player using Windows Media Player 11:

My Directions:

1. Connect your mp3 player to the computer

2. Open Windows Media Player

3. Click on the icon of your Mp3 player on the left-hand side of the Library

4. Click on the Songs, Tracks, or other Music Folder

5. Find a song or songs that you want to delete

6. Left-click the song once to highlight it

7. Press the “Delete” button on your computer’s keyboard

To copy (RIP) files from CD to Mp3 player using Windows Media Player 10:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/windowsmediaplayer/getstarted/ripcd.mspx

To copy (RIP) files from CD to Mp3 player using Windows Media Player 11:

Can't remove music off my mp3 to replace it with new music

Triple Reset for Philips’ GoGear:

Disconnect the Go Gear from computer. Press the reset pinhole until the player turns off. Hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard. If this pop-up does not appear, reset the player again WHILE connected to the computer. Open the Philips Device Manager, and go to Repair Tab. Reset the player one more time while connected to computer. Follow the repair instructions.

After repair is complete, upgrade the firmware for this player. Will erase all the songs, but you should be good to go again.

My player gets stuck and shuts down only after a day..!!

Try doing a repair in the Philips Device Manager, but it may not be enough to rid the player of a virus. Definitely worth a shot, though.

Phillips Go Gear 8G

If you have Vista, you have to go to Philips website and download the updated version of the Device Manager AND you have to update the firmware on the player. If the update stuck for 12 hours, the usual reason is that you were not connected to the internet at the time (although there are other possibilities).

Phillips gp gear will not play music downloaded.

The songs that you transferred have a DRM license on them that does not have transfer rights (i.e.: the songs you downloaded can be played on a computer, but cannot be transferred to an mp3 player). The GoGear is giving you this message in hopes that you will Sync it with Windows Media Player and acquire the said transfer rights.

If you download songs that are in true mp3 format, you will not have this problem. Also, if you choose a music service that allows mp3 transfer at your subscription levwel, and continue to pay for that subscription every month, it will also clear your problem.

Philips go gear does not switch off why?

Hold the button in for about 5 seconds. It's like a safety built in so you don't bump the power to off accidently.
