Erratic cursor
It happens with both? Sounds like it may be a driver or motherboard issue.
Check the HDD for errors with Checkdisk (Start -> Run -> cmd -> Ok -> chkdsk /f
Try redownloading the touchpad/mouse drivers from the Toshiba site
Cursor only moves left to right
This device is monitored via a kind of strain gauge; that is why it does not seem to move; it does move but not noticeably.
If it is no longer responsive in one or the other direction, I would call it dead.
I have never seen one of these loose but I would expect to find a small sealed housing that has an equally small, multicontact connector attached.
If you are unlucky, Toshiba may have attached this to the keyboard's platform requiring the replacement of it as a unit.
On most laptops, the keyboard is fairly easy to remove and if you can accomplish that, restoring the truncated joy stick is probably not difficult.
Sorry I cannot give you detailed instructions for disassembly.
Toshiba Satellite M30
You can try to select safe mode and do a system restore (Start-all programs-accessories-system tools-system restore) choosing the date when your laptop was working properly. If you are using Vista, you would see if you had a Windows Update or other such software changes. It is like undoing that but there would be no changes with your personal data. If your laptop works faster after that, please do not have the same software or update again. Hope this helps. Thank you.
Lan driver
Please try this. Please go to the device manager under control panel-hardware-device manager then select the network adapters. Click on the LAN network adapter then please select uninstall. If this option is not present, please click on properties then driver tab. Click on uninstall - ok. Then please restart your laptop. Please check if it works. If it does not, please visit pcsupport.toshiba.com using a different computer and download the driver from there. Hope this helps. Thank you.
Laptop Screen Not Lighting.
Your graphics card is going out. You need to replace your graphics card. If your card is a dedicated one, you can probably just have the card replacced. If it is an embedded one, then you will have to get a whole new screen.
Answer to your question
You will need to get into the bios, and set the CD drive to boot before the hard drive. Since your in this uncompromising loop, remove the hard drive, then start the machine. It should go to the initial Toshiba screen and you will see the prompt on what to press to get to the bios, or utility set up. Once your in the bios, find the boot order and set the CD drive over the hdd. Then put the hdd back in, the recovery or operating system disc in the CD drive, and start the machine. It should now boot from the disc. At this point you will want to do a system repair. If the repair doesn't take, then reformat the hdd, and install a new operating system. If the hdd will not format or you have any issues during or after the install, then the hdd has failed and will need replaced. If you need any futher aststance, just ask.
No screen
Does the initial Toshiba screen come up before the Windows count down screen? This is the Toshiba, right?
So How do I..
if you have the restore disk you should be able to put it in abd boot from the cd and it should go from there it will ask you some questions but overall it is not too hard

Unplug everything from the laptop, and take out the battery. Hold down the power
