Sound trouble in toshiba tecra 9100
Please check the physical volume knob.
Fn+Esc is for mute. Please press on it again and make sure that it is not mute. If it does not work, please go to the device manager under control panel-hardware and sound-device manager-sound, game and video controllers. Click the entry for the sound (if there is only one, please click on it), select properties, click on driver tab then uninstall. Please restart your laptop and check sound. Hope it works. Thank you.

My problem is the same
The 9100 series are famous for this problem, and it's more than likely hardware related and not driver related: the connector on the motherboard (where the sound card connects to) is probably loose - so it's not seeing the sound card (or only seeing part of it). Problem is probably caused by chassis flex over the years, and it's pretty common.
Solutons? Dunno... I've fixed about a thousand of these but over the years, about 1 out of 5 had the same problem recur, and I'm tired of fixing these things. Cheapest workaround? Get a cheap USB sound card and a cheap set of laptop speakers (cost me about $4 total) - a little cumbersome, but it don't cost anything....
I have toshiba Tecra 9000
It's a common problem with the Tecra 9000's - either one or both USB ports and sometimes the external KB port along with it. The 2 USB's and external KB port (and the TV out port next to it) are all located on the same daughterboard that plugs into the motherboard, and in your case, more than likely the connector on the motherboard is bad (gotten loose). There's no easy fix for this unless you've got an ultra-fine soldering tip, good soldering skills....
How about a workaround? A PC card (PCMCIA card) that gives you 2 or 4 high speed USB 2.0 ports - it'll stick out a little on the right hand side, but in return you'll have fast USB ports, and you can use a USB keyboard with the thing.

I Have a Toshiba laptop that says error loading operating system
If you have a windows xp CD you could try a repair installation. Start to install windows, and when it checks for previous versions it may give you the option to repair. this will look like a fresh install but your files will still be intact.
If the repair option is not there, you will need to format the HD and start from sctratch
Sound
It rarely happens but as you are saying that your laptop fell off. This can happen. It is a sound card failure may be due to a broken connection.
I think you will need to take it to a computer technician.
Hope this helps.
