make sure it is listed in the control panel audio screen as an input device and that it is not muted in the mixer

Have you checked in volume control that your mike is listed and is not muted. sorry, that is volume control/mixer. You should also enter the sounds/ audio control section of your machine and ensure that microphone is there and is listed and ticked as an input device.

Hi yes the laptop will still power on and at least beep at you or light up the LEDs and start the fans, you will get no display with out the ram installed, but you will get a basic power on so listen for those fans,if you install the ram you should get a a display on the screen with the branding logo and boot information but without the hard drive it will have no operating system
