Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Red green color is terrible. 2 D like picture

Your convergence circuit has failed in your tv. Very Common. Repair shop will charge around $300 to fix. Requires replacing STK chips, some resistors, maybe a fuse or two and convergence re-alignment from service menu.

I have a sony rear projection tv kp-46wt500 it has

David, you need to take off the front cover (where the speakers and power button are). On the back there are two screws on each side. unscrew those then pull. There are push in clips holding it on. 4, two on top two on bottom. Just pull hard, you won't break the cover, then find a place to set it aside (you may need to disconnect the front AV hook-up, thats simple, just unplug it like a outlet) and then there will be another panel, held in by four more screws take those out. Then you will find a like 3 inch square thing with 6 plastic screw knobs on it. It goes blue green red (could be different for yours, but should be the same, if not, one of the colors is labeled) Ok, no find the red one and turn it probably counter-clockwise. That will reduce the amount of voltage that the color red gets.
Oh, forgot to say, there are two rows of screw knobs, one says "focus" you can leave that one alone. the other says "screen" that is the one you want to change.
And also, when you are turning it. I'm tlaking like 1/8inch or less turn at a time. If not you can fry it and actually burn out the bulb. But I don't think it is burnt out. Just getting too much voltage

What does the ic 406 and. The ps401 and 402 look

Ic 406 is the audio amp ic. It is on the signal board, that's the one with the tuner on it. It's mounted on an aluminum heat sink with fins on it. It's all by itself. 401 & 402 are small pico fuses normally black in color and you can't tell by looking at them if they are bad. You have to use a continuity checker or an ohm meter. The signal board board does not have the transformer with the red leads coming out of it.

When set is turned on it comes on breifly and goes

You need to check the bulb in the back of the set as it could be on the way out . just check to see if the bar in the bulb has gone black as it is a good sign the bulb is on it's way out . the bulbs only last 2-3 years or 4000 hours . If thats ok you most probably have dry joints on the tuner , they just need resoldering

Curved horizontal green lines bout

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

f0900cb.jpg
Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

2c07611.pngSolution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc

Color problems the coloring is more yellow and I

This model had a major issue with the CRTs failing. The blue CRT is probably bad. The sad news is that Sony is not supporting much of the older CRT style tv's whether it is a projection or direct view type. What Sony has you do is to remove the CRT and box it up then send it to them so they can rebuild it. The problem is the cost in doing this. Plus, to be sure you would not have a problem with the other two CRTs you would also need to send them in too. In either case the cost of doing this would run more than replacing the set with a new LCD panel.
I hope this helps,

3D image, ghost image, with shadows. how can I fix

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs.

Picture is distorted - colors

If convergence (see photos) it can be a do it yourself repair.

Repair involves getting at the two STK-392-560 chips this set should use and replacing them.

My guess here is the chips failed and took out one of the fuses that protect them.

Let me know if you have any questions, I am here to help.

Look at the photos and if they told you something you did not know, rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free.
