My MHC-GX450 worked fine for

After calling SONY support, they wanted me to send the entire system - speakers, cables... Please! That's is dumb, and the rep had to be reading it from a script. So I managed to get the covers off and figured it out on my own. The drive belt for the CD tray had come off the pulleys. I simply put it back on and... Voila! Saved myself hundreds of dollars for a $2 belt. I called SONY and ordered two spares. Sometimes, if you have some mechanical and basic electrical skills you can save yourself a lot of money and aggravation.

What means shuf

That's short for "shuffle". In shuffle play, the player randomly picks a track from the CD to play, so you don't know which one is coming up next. On some Sony models with multiple-CD players, shuffling also randomly picks one of the discs as well as a random track. I don't know if yours is one of them, though.

We had a power failiure

Hello
Faults occurs to any electronic system due to a power failure and regain is unpredictable. It may be a simple fault or a serious. In your systems' case, the fuse resistor has blown out and you have replace it you says. After replacement you gets the power in idication too. If the fault was in the power supply system, the replaced fuse may have already blown out. Here it is there and OK, that is why you gets the power indicater lighted. The fault is in the internal control circuits, especially to the main system control section. if system control section was OK, you may have other functions to work. So you have to troubleshoot that section. You must have a good quality miltimeter, and ability to trouble shooting an advanced digital system circuit board. Ultra care must be taken to touch with this section as it can be considered as the brain of the whole system. If you haven't enough expereince and tools, it will be best to get this device repaired by any experienced service person. OK

You mean "protect", right?

Generally speaking, an amp attempts to protect itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Look up "Hooking Up Optional Components" and assess what your PC's audio and video capabilities are that would use the Game Inputs. The Sony end accepts standard RCA pin cables x 3. Adapters are available at any electronics store to match your PC to that. Within the PC you need to configure the audio via whatever Sound Controls are in charge.

I have the sony mhc-gx450 and my CD player is

Most probably there can be two kind of issues (there is not enough data about symptoms) :

-either the lens is dirty / dusty : clean it with a special CD and cleaning product (the easiest, it doesn't require you to disassemble the player). If you are meticullous you can also clean it with ear-cleaner and a drop of windows cleaning product (you need to dismantle the player)

-or the drive belt is cut or loosen : change it for a new one (be careful : a new belt can seem REALLY short because it has to be tense almost to its maximum. If you use a wrong belt -a bit too long- it will slip). symptoms : the drive doesn't fully eject (or at all), or the drawer can't completly get back. The motor can't mount inside the CD hole.

c7y_badge_rn_1._v47060296_.gif I recently repaired a GX250 that refused to turn on (flashing power led), and apparently this fix works for most other problems too, including "no disc" errors and no sound output.

What you need to do is clean and reseat the (widest) white ribbon connector that connects the front panel to the large circuit board on the side. To get to the connector, you'll have to take off the sides and the top, and then unscrew the cd tray so you can lift it up and get your arm and hand in far enough to reach the connector from the opposite side. Then unplug the ribbon cable, blow the connector out with some compressed air, and plug it back in firmly.

If you can find a method recommended by a hardware manufacturer, go for it.

Some interesting fact-filled reading:

http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/cdfaq.htm

One excerpt:

"Even if you have trouble changing a light bulb and do not know which end of a soldering iron is the one to avoid, reading through this document will enable you to be more knowledgeable about your CD player. Then, if you decide to have it professionally repaired, you will have a better chance of recognizing incompetence or down right dishonesty when dealing with the service technician. For example, a bad laser is not the most likely cause of a player that fails to play discs - it is actually fairly far down on the list of typical faults. A dirty lens is most likely. There - you learned something already! "

"Can a dirty CD or dirty lens damage my player?"

"Instant troubleshooting chart - most common problems and likely causes"
"General inspection, cleaning, and lubrication"

"A CD lens cleaning disc is nearly worthless except for the most minor dust as it will not completely remove grease, grime, and condensed tobacco smoke products (yet another reason not to smoke!) "

I need to clean the stereo's laser lens. I don't

No disc error can be a DIY like the following steps.

Assuming that the disc is good.

1.Cleaning the lens. - Sometimes because of dust the lens can't read any disc.

Try clean the lens by soft cotton buds. Be careful while doing this.

Open the cover of your unit then you will see the optical lens right on the upper portion.

Component like yours is quite technical for assembly and dis-assembly so be careful.

2.Replacing the ribbon - Check the ribbon connected to the lens from the main board for scratch, damage. Once it has an open line then of course the lens can't read the disc. Also try to erase the contact by pencil eraser.

If you've done the steps above and the symptoms still there then the next step requires you a little knowledge in soldering technique and reading the ohmmeter.

3.Checked the motor - Check the motor that spin the disc with an ohmmeter. You can test it using the ohmmeter (x1) even it is connected on the lens assembly.

Good motor - reading should be fairly high and it will spin.

Bad motor - reading will drop to low resistance and will not spin.

Hint : 50% of my repaired unit the above parts are commonly caused of the problem.

If you confirmed that you have a defective motor then replace it with a new one. Before replacing the new motor you have to check the clearance of the disc holder with the old one. The clearance should be the same as the old because if not the lens will not read the disc if it is too far or too close.

If you already cleaned the lens, and confirmed that the ribbon is good as well as the motor then I've advice you to send it to repair shop because the next step should be done with an expert because it is quite technical diagnosing the fault between the pick-up lens and the main board.

Thanks for using fixya.

My stereo won't even read the CD-player cleaner.

You need to unscrew the Sony MHC-GX450 CD Shelf System where the player is located and pull the whole DVD/Cd assembly.I suggest you have it done by professional technician since the laser lens is very sensitive. If its not reading the CD cleaner it only means that the laser is worn out and needs to be replaced.

Hello, the protect circuit is likely detecting a damaged speaker or speaker wire.Check the unit with one speaker at a time connected, or if you have an ohmmeter measure each speaker they should read approximately 8 ohms. When you connect a speaker thats bad the unit is designed to shut down and flash protect.
