Error code 71
That is a laser alignment issue...
You might get lucky:
1. unplug printer power cord from wall or powerstrip.
2. Turn ON printer (without the powercord plugged in).
3. Plug in powercord and turn ON printer again.
If error code 71 remains .... repeat above steps.... but I would advise replacing ($180 ~ $240) instead of repairing ($150)...
Hope this helps!

NG Codes poor line quality
To check your line quality is very simple. Unplug the fax from the telephone line and substitute it with a normal single line telephone. Make an incoming and outgoing call. if you hear any echo or crackle on the line when you are being quiet, then you have a noisy line and you should report it to your telephone company to have the line cleaned. If it is quiet then the problem lays with the fax. There are ways around the problem in the software of the machine but its quite complicated and best left to a trained brother engineer.

How do I fix my fax machine so that it does it's job. By that I mean how can I make it print and fax?
First .is the machine in an error state on the display?
2nd. You MUST use the line lead and adaptor that the machine came with for the tel line. Others just wont work and you may get a dial tone but it wont receive as it wont detect ringing current.
As for not printing, does it make any sounds when you send it a print job or print a report from the keypad? Did it work with its previous owner? To reset the unit you have to enter the following on the keypad within 3 seconds to get it into the maintenance mode. Press *2864* that's star2864star. When it says "Maintenance" then enter 01, it will then go back to maintenance. Now press 55 to reset the scanner. When back in maintenance again the press 02, when back in maintenance again press 99 to exit it. All should work now and it will be as it was when it came out of its box. If this does not work then it has a circuit board fault and wont be worth repairing. Its a very very good machine. As an ex brother engineer I can say it was their best machine.

How do I remove a paper jam? The paper is
The following is general advice that applies to removing paper jams in most printers, copiers, etc.
Switch off the printer at the wall and unplug it. Remove the paper tray from the printer. Check to see if the printer has an access door in the rear to allow you to see inside (open it). Open any other external flaps (eg. manual paper feed tray) that will allow you to see inside. Open any internal flaps or levers designed for user operation and usually indicated with a green or orange coloured tab.
Always remove jammed paper by pulling it in the direction of normal travel only. Don't try to pull it out against the direction that it entered the printer. Sometimes rollers inside the machine have a knob (usually coloured green or orange) that can be used to manually wind the page through the printer or fax. Always turn in direction of arrow indicated only.
After removing page, return all levers, flaps, doors, paper trays etc to original positions, reconnect power to the printer and test

Pls close cover
press on the top right hand corner of the front door and see if it goes away. these doors start wearing at the pivot point inside the door at the bottom and hangs down so it does not touch the sensor inside the frame. If you check at the frame that matches to the top corner of the door you can see the sensor, it has a small switch you can fold a small piece of paper and press it in to keep the door close switch activated.

How to tell when toner is low
The machine has a toner sensor built in. It will tell you on the lcd when toner is low. When using some "Compatible" toners you may find that it does not work properly.

Keep receiving duplicate faxes
Some Brother fax machines are programmed incorrectly so they do not acknowledge receiving the last page of a document. The sender doesn't know you got it, and will resend. It's harsh advice, but the only solution is to buy a different brand.

I have a black streak all on one side when i copy ?
If it is just when you copy and not when you print then it is a cleaning issue. Toner cartridge would cause the line to appear on copies, printouts and faxes. There is a piece of glass inside the auto document feeder that is probably dirty. Open up the document feeder as if you were clearing an original document jam. Look for a piece of glass inside the ADF, it will run the length of the document feeder. There is probably some dirt or another popular problem is white out. Clean off the glass with glass cleaner or alcohol and it should fix the problem.
