Check to see if your device memory is full. If this is the case, you may have to delete some files to create space for your songs. Are there movies that you have already seen still on the device? Delete them if you do not need them any more as a single movie file can sometimes take up enough space for 100 songs.
A way to check the memory is to click on your Ipod name in itunes and it will take you to the device information.
Hope this is helpful.

To reset your iPod:
  • 1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  • 2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
    Tip:
    • If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
    • If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.

According to Apple, if you have forgotten the code, you can unlock the
IPod by doing the following:
Connect your IPod to the primary computer you use it with (the first one
IPod synced with), and open iTunes. When you disconnect iPod from the
computer, it will no longer be locked.
If you can't unlock IPod using either [the code or connecting it to the
computer you use to manage its songs]. . . you can restore your iPod to
factory settings using iPod Updater. Please note that this will erase
all data on your iPod. Afterwards, you can add your music and data back
to your iPod.
If you want to change the primary computer that your IPod is associated
with, do this:
1. Restore your iPod. Warning: The restore process cannot be undone.
All of your songs and files will be deleted. Always make a backup of
your important data.
2. Connect your iPod to the computer that you want to be the primary
computer.
3. Open iTunes and synchronize.
Apple also notes that company "representatives cannot unlock an iPod if
you forget your combination. If you can't unlock your iPod and you don't
have access to the primary computer, your only option is to restore the
IPod, which will erase all music and data."
Good Luck, I hope this helps

Welcome to Fixya

Looks like the software just hanged-up on you. Try to reset the Ipod by following the procedures below.

1st option:
Turn the Hold switch on, then back to off.
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for 10 seconds (until the Apple logo appears).
You may need to repeat the reset several times.
If the reset doesn't help, then put the iPod into forced disk mode.

2nd option (Disk Mode):
Plug the iPod into a high-powered USB port, let it sit for 2 hours, then disconnect it. If you have a wall charger, plug in the iPod, then follow these steps while it is still plugged in.
Turn the Hold switch on, then back to off.
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears
Immediately switch your figures to press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until "Disk Mode" appears at the top.
For a lot of people, this solves the problem. Connect the iPod to the computer and (assuming it shows up) reset the iPod again to get it out of Disk Mode. If at this point you still have the white screen, restore the iPod using the restore function in iTunes under the Summary tab (this will erase everything on the iPod and put it at factory settings).
Note: Do not disconnect or eject the iPod until the store is totally done. After you think it's done, wait another five minutes.

Ipod 80gb displays red x

check to see if your ipod is under warranty, if so take it to an apple store.

if i were you i would manually reset your ipod and immediately after you see the apple logo smack hard on its side on a sofa or padded carpet. If you do it right you will hear the hard drive make a weird noise and then make a clicking sound and your ipod should work

You have nothing to loose, the most apple will do for you is offer you a 10% discount off any new ipod (no matter how damaged the ipod)

Red x of death

The red x means that the hard drive is broken.

The hard drive can be fixed by resetting it by holding the menu and center button, and as soon as you see the apple logo appear on the screen hit it on the side on padded carpet or couch. make sure you hit it on its left side (left in reference to picture above) if it does not work the first time try again except a little harder.

(you are doing this because the arm inside the hard drive that reads the information from the hard drive is stuck in the middle of the drive, and and hitting it on its left side will get it unstuck)

The only thing that you could break normally when you hit the ipod on its side would be the hard drive and because that is not working you have nothing to loose.

It appears that you may have a hardware problem (I.E., the screen). Your best bet is to go to the Apple Store, and I have heard of them replacing the iPod for you/or the broken part. They are known for their fantastic customer service, so it is worth a try to take it to them and see what they say.
I remember I broke my iPhone, I took it in, and they replaced it for me. Hope this helps. Sometimes they require you to set up an appointment with them instead of you just walking in. Go to Apple's web page and locate the nearest Apple Store and once you get to their web page, you will see an appointment section. The directions are pretty straight forward! Hope this helps!
