You can remove the back and check for bulged electrolytic caps on the power supply, you can also check to see if the power is putting out the right voltage, the the output voltage should be written on the power supply board by the connector. Also look at the inverter for cold solder connections.

VW42L HDTV I have picture and

Your TV is probably getting interference from electrical appliances that produce electromagnetic interference. These includes fluorescent lights and electric motors such as water pumps. Cars, motorcycles and other things the emits electromagnetic signal can interfere with your TV.
Check for any new electrical installations within 5 meter radius or any newly connected appliance on the branch circuit where your TV is plugged. Disable if there's any then operate the TV. If your TV is not mounted on the wall, try moving it to another location to check if this is the cause of the problem.

My 42 inch vizio LCD

It goes into shut down because it senses short circuits in the power supply or in the backlight inverter boards, those are the two areas that should be checked first, and go on from there.

I have a vizio flat screen and the color is off..

Check on initial settings in your menu; most makers provide a 'factory default' selection that will come pretty close.
It may also have 'Warm' and 'Cool' settings for color that provide either vivid color or less intense.

Will not power on and screen is blank

Will have to start from the power point and work your probe from the powerr supply to the main board.
You can come to a conclusion with this test and then to pinpoint , might need more instructions.
So to start with open panel check fuses, if blown replace, if it blows off again failure in power, failure of capacitor, rectifier, SM drive.
If power is OK, and goes fine to the board but with no signs of life , check on the processor voltage, Oscillation. If not possible faliure of the controller.
Take help to identify and confirm this section, so as not to tamper.
Hope this helps. Good day

Picture but no sound

Let verify first to narrow down to where the problem can be. First, make sure the MUTE function is not activated, then check the on screen sound set up menu to make sure the speakers are not set to OFF. If the setting is OK, then attach the powered PC speakers to the Audio Line out RCA jacks (Red and White) to see if you can get the sound there, if you do, then the problem can be in the power amp circuits, if you do not get the sound at RCA jacks, then the problem can be in the sound processor circuit. Please post back what you find.
