Go to start my riding mower and it backfires as i am trying to start it. but runs fine once running. doesnt backfire every time starting it. mower runs dam good while mowing. any clues what might be causing this ? thanks
My bet is the way you shut the mower down after the previous mowing?.Common problem is shutting down the hot engine while the throttle is in any other position then full idle...two things can happen when this is done...a backfire seconds after shutting down or starting up due to excessive gas left in the cylinders and intake when shutting down ..so try this pull the throttle to full idle and let run for 30 seconds or so the turn the switch off..all gases will be used up.. Works for me...good luck..
First smell the oil is there a gas smell to it?the needle valve maybe dripping fuel and over flowing into the intake
sometimes these motors will load up tne cylinders with unused gas if you shut it diwn while not in full slow idle..try this make sure you throttle back to full idle fir a few seconds before shutting down..that will allow all tne gas in the cylinders to be used up..this happens to my craftsman 22.5 hp.. Stops it every-time..good luck

When you let it sit did you remove all the fuel or add a additive? If you did not then I would recommend that you remove all the fuel and add brand new fuel to your system. Gasoline only last for about 3 to 4 months before it will start to go bad and this sounds like your problem

First,if your blade is bent and hasnt been replaced yet,do it, second make sure your timing is still right on your engine.

I had the same issue and after trying everything I tokk the gas cap off and noticed there was negative pressure in the fuel tank when I broke the seal... I'm pretty sure the gas cap was just too tight, I threaded it back on but did not torque it down and the mower is running fine.
