CHECK SEE IF FUEL RUNNING COULD HAVE CLOGGED FUEL FILTER CHECK FUEL PUMP FUSE RELAY OR FUSE.MAKE YOU INSTALL NEW WIRE HARNESS TO THE NEW FUEL PUMP BECAUSE THE OLD FUEL PUMP WIRE HARNESS COULD HAVE SHORT OR OPEN.IF FUEL SYSTEM OKAY CODE SCAN VECHICLE USING A SCANNER, LOOK FOR FAULT CODE FOR IGNITION SYSTEM MALFUNCTION COULD HAVE BAD IGNITION MODULE,BAD CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR OR BLOWED FUSE TO THE IGNITION SYSTEM.

I have checked tome relay and swapped it out and still does the same and the fuel filter is new and I'm going to change the wire harness and see if that works

COULD BE OPEN IN THE WIRE HARNESS.

MEANT TO SAY YOUR INERTIA SWITCH COULD NEED TO BE RESET.ITS INERTIA SWITCH LOCATED IN THE TRUNK AREA LOOK AROUND BACK AREA WHERE TRUNK OPENING HINGES ARE LOCATED.

  • Jonah Oneal Aug 04, 2011

WIRE HARNESS TO THE FUEL PUMP SHOULD COST ABOUT $25.00

INERTIA SWITCH JUST NEED TO BE RESET DONT HAVE TO BUY NEW ONE YET.TRY TO RESET SWITCH AND SEE IF FUEL PUMP WILL WORK.

Check your spark. If you have spark check your fuel to see if the pump is working. If there's no spark, check your distributor cap. If there's no fuel check your fuel pump relay and also the emergency cutoff switch on the drivers side in the trunk behind the carpet, make sure its pushed in.

I have checked the emergency cutoff switch and its always up and it doesn't have a distributor it has coal pack

When I crank my 96 Town car, the are at least 3 clicks before it actually turns over and cranks. is my ignition switch going bad?

No it sounds more like the starter solenoid sticking, give it a few solid tickles with a hammer to free it up.

My 97 lincoln town car will turn over but won't start

You need to do several things

Is the battery in good shape & have over 12.5 volts
Do you have fuel pressure at the motor key on engine off
Do you have spark or injector pulse when cranking

I have a 2001 Lincoln Town Car executive series 4.6 v 8 it cranks fine after it cranks initially , from time to time it takes a while between starts to crank again (if it's been driven then sat) what...

If it only does it when it sat a day or so, I would
lean toward fuel pump issues

That is a thin line to come back here & have to support
that statement.

I would be up on my spark plugs, cleaning maf sensor, replacing
O2 Sensors etc, only when they are due, based on time & mileage

eg: get the basics out of the way first.

An old battery can do that also

You say cranks fine after initial crank
Some people refer to cranking ,as meaning a no start
condition. Cranking has little to do with starting

The more I read your question the similar it is to others

You don't have a problem with the car starting at all

You have a problem with the starter turning over the engine

Help me out here

I just change the battery and cables on my 96 lincon town car and it started fine but after it runs for 20mins or so and you turn it off then it will not crank (no turning of starter at all) a hour later...

i think the starter is getting too hot. either heat from the exhaust manifold or cat. converter. check where the bat. cable connects to the starter. that little part is getting too hot. making the starter not work. you might replace the starter but after a short time it will do it again.
