My son was going to replace the transmission filter/fluid for me. The filter they sold him is similar in looks to an oil filter and he cannot find where the old one is. What type of filter does this vehicle require and what is the procedure to change it? My son is a very good mechanic but this one stumped him.
Ok, here's the deal. there are 2 types of transmissions one with an external oil filter( kinda looks like the oil filter for the engine) and then there is the other type of transmission that was produced later on the 4 cylinder engines that doesnt have a removable filter. it does have a screen that is not servicable, it can only be replaced during the rebuild of the transmission. this design is supposed to be "back flushed" to remove all debris. Most good transmission shops have this type of system that pressureizes the system and does this.
If your gonna do this on your own, what you will need to do is buy 4-5 quarts of transmission fluid, drain the oil from the pan on the front of the engine, reinstall it, add the fluid, drive for 30 min, and then repeat the process.
I have the same problem. The fix I think would be to remove the pan/cover located on the front end of the trany. I have not yet removed mine to see if it was located inside that pan/cover. If you look next to the Dip Stick there is a location for a can type oil filter, but if the holes were not tapped out (like mine were not) then i recommend removing the pan/cover located on the front of the trany. There is a drain plug and no pan but if you were looking at the plug from laying down under driver side the pan/cover is to your right toward the front. It does look like a pan but it is mounted to the frontside of the trany.
They do have trans filters that look identical to an oil filter,but on ths filter is will say "FOR A/T ONLY" call your mitsu dealer with V.I.N # to determine which filter you have on your car.mid-year design changes is common for mitsu.
Unfortunately the above a bit a of a generalization. According to the mk8 Galant service manual, there are both internal and external filters, and the external one is pictured as the "can" type, similar to the engine oil filter (so it's likely you have the right part). Sadly, the exact location isn't revealed, but the external filter should be reachable without opening the pan.
The filter for transmissions is inside the transmission, you must remove the transmission pan to service it, the filter they sold you must be an engine oil filter.

The filter they sold us was a transmission filter. There are two types of filters listed for the 2003 Mitsubishi Galant 4 cyl automatic transmission.
My friend was trying to change the transmission fluid on my 2003 mitsubishi galant and could not locate the old filter. Apparantly my car does not have a transmission pan, we could not figure out how to change it, please help.
