Smoke Why does my suv smoke when I start it up? After running for about five minutes it stops.

Mate I use to drive a freightliner and it cut out on me one day, I eventually got it started but cut out again after about 5 minutes, I rang a mechanic to come out and he found a heat sensor wire came off the radiator and that caused the motor to cut out... Hope I haven't wasted your time.......

somthing in the ignition is causing a weak spark--or fuel inject circuit is running to rich----------all causes improper burning---------get a computer diagnostic done

Check you cabin filter it is under hood on pass side near wiper blades
If the blower motor is running fine and no smell from there.

black smoke - oil in the cylinders

White smoke - water in the wrong area - probably a head gasket.

The head gasket is what I am hoping for because it is cheaper to do. And most instructions manuals from an autoparts store has step by step instructions.

If it is oil then you are looking at rebuilding or replacing your engine.

Take a look at both the oil and antifreeze to check for cross contamination which would verify the blown head gasket.

you need to replace your heater core. it is up under the dash on that side of the vehicle. but as for the white smoke it sounds like a possible blown head gasket or a cracked head.

Valve stem oil seal is worn. It doesn't smoke when injector disconnected because no compression as cylinder not firing with no fuel.

there are couple of smoke type.blue smoke is oil, black smoke is fuel, and white smoke is water, if it clears after starting and running a few minutes it's probably your valve guide seals leaking oil down on top of your pistons, causing it to smoke until burned off and foul your plugs.
